Hurney: QB is Carolina Panthers' 'No. 1 need'

If we're going to draft a QB do it in the first round or not at all

now more than ever the cream rises to the top when it comes to QBs in the draft because scouts are emphasizing every intricacy of the position

How's his footwork?

Does he have good size?

What's his throwing motion?

Does he follow through?

Does he handle pressure well?

How is his pocket presence?

How does he throw on the run?

Does he go through his reads and progressions and how fast can he do it?

Does he stare down receivers or does he look off defenders?

How does he do when it's crunch time (close game, big game, leading a go ahead scoring drive in the 4th)

etc etc... the point being QBs are the most scrutinized players of any position in the league and scouts are becoming more and more like perfectionists when it comes to the position to minimize the risk of getting burned. This is a guy that you plan on sending out there for every offensive snap and the skill set required to be successful for a QB is so much more extensive than for a lineman. There are too many kinds of defense to allow for marginally talented QBs to be successful. Some really want to get at the QB and send blitzers constantly, some want to play tight man coverage and make the QB have to fit the ball in a space and throw it hard and accurate enough. Compound this with the fact that you can't send your late round QB to play for the Cologne Centurions during the offseason so they can work on their skills and it's almost a waste of a pick later on in the draft you're better off drafting kick returners or offensive line depth

And hope is probably a GM's worst enemy more than anything. That's when you start thinking Stefan Lefors is going to inherit the offense and Brett Basanez has shown intangibles against Pittsburgh's third and fourth stringers in the preseason

We need help at the qb position immediately - it makes no sense to roll the dice on a qb pick that in all probablility would not be an immediate upgrade on Clausen. If we were going to do that we may as well keep Moore - at least we know what we have in him. I think either we will trade the number 1 pick for a vet qb or take fairley and hope for a vet to become available.

(By Joseph Person, [email protected]) Panthers general manager Marty Hurney has the same seat every year at Senior Bowl practices, alone in the top row at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.p/Hurney might have the same vantage point, but he is in a different perch this year at the college all-star game - holding the No. 1 pick in the April draft.

This team better hope that the front office isn't really buying the new "Jimmy's going to grow" hype. Did Hurney watch Clausen play at all this season? JC will grow......tired of sitting the bench. And Pike has no chance of ever playing QB in the NFL.

the sucky and scary thing about this year is for some stupid reason lots of draftniks have yo gabba gabbert ranked highly in spite of him having really poor pocket presence, esp. when under pressure which effects his footwork. many scouts will get a hard on because a QB has good size and a cannon for an arm and will allow that to persuade them that since he has "all the tools" he can be taught the rest, only they rarely ever are and they end up being a bust.

point is, this is a really bad year to be wanting/needing a QB....esp. if you are looking for a prototypical drop back QB. yo gabba might be the best of the class of that kind, but he's really just a turd floating to the top. all the need and desire for there to be one this year won't make one magically appear.

here's something to consider. had clausen stayed in college this year, based on how much he improved every year he was starting for ND, clausen would have easily been considered the #1 QB of this draft.

as much as i complain about him, i'm not at all convinced that he isn't better than any QB in this draft. aside from newton anyways

btw, this isn't a compliment for clausen, it's more of a statement about how bad this QB draft class is.

I have come to the realiziation that I don't have a f**king clue how to evaluate a college QB....and predict how he will perform in the NFL.

I suggest that each of you come to this same harsh realization about yourselves. :D

if it was true i would.

Now if only the so-called experts at ESPN could come to the same conclusions. There is so much that goes into being a top flight QB. It is pretty much a crapshoot trying to evaluate them. That is why you still see guys like Alex Smith and Jawalrus Russell going nuber 1 overall and guys like Tony Romo getting passed over 220+ times.

Not so sure about that. He's got a rep for being a whiny diva and blaming teammates.

Bottom line for me though: Pretty much every QB that Andy Reid has turned into a star has gone to another team and completely sucked :(

They just don't function as well outside that system, and what we're running won't be anything close to equivalent.

Just say no to Reid QBs :nonod:

There really isn't enough information to make that determination. Mcnabb has had one year. And that one year was with the Redskins, a dysfunctional team if there ever was one. And Mcnabb is really the only "star" qb that reid has had, until he got Vick.

As far as the non stars, Garcia did pretty well in Philly, and then played just as well in Tampa. He also played fairly well in Sf when he was there. AJ Feely sucked in Philly, and sucked elsewhere. Detmer was a career backup in Philly.

And people who have no clue how to read GM speak will automatically start screaming that we're drafting a QB

Boy would I love to play Poker with some of the folks on here.

Sometimes in poker, especially when your hand is a joke like our QB situation, you do the prudent thing and say exactly what you need to do. Like in this situation, we fold on our current stable of QBs and lack of FA prospects and wait for the next shuffle of the cards.

Newton is our Ace of Spades, and we've got our face up pick of the deck. Count on it.
