Hurney: QB is Carolina Panthers' 'No. 1 need'

McNabb will not play for a losing organization like ours at this point of his career unless this is the only organization giving him an opportunity. And unless you plan on eating that HUGE contract the Skins just gave him, Carolina wont trade for him either.

Don't know if he is an option at this point. But I understand that McNabb's contract is mostly smoke and mirrors. The guaranteed money was not that much and they could get rid of him without paying that much if I remember correctly. I think right now there may be better choices.

mcnabb won't want to go to any team where he isn't the long term solution. pretty obvious here they want a young team and that extends to the QB. this team is thinking long term and i don't see mcnabb being long term in many teams.

i like the guy and think he's still a good QB, but he wouldn't be a fit here for quite a few reasons. for that matter, kolb wouldn't either but mainly because of him being a WCO QB.

There hasn't been a lot of talk about the Jags moving Gerrard but Del Rio has made a couple of statements that I think could mean he is available. IMO, Gerrard is the perfect type of QB this team needs right now.

That'd work, for reasonable compensation. And he has local ties (ECU).

(plus I'm sure Shula would champion that idea)

McNabb would know our team would only be renting him 1-2 years tops to keep the seat warm for a Jimmy Clausen or another QB. I dont think that scenario interests McNabb at all, and he sees himself still being a quality player that can produce. At this point, McNabb wants a nice deal to ride his career out on and a chance a a title. 2 things he wouldnt get here. I dont think McNabb wants to play "Rodney Peete" in Carolina.

Garrard is expected to stay in Jacksonville

Really, we are very limited on who we can get. We can't be picky. We'd have to give up something in order to get someone.

In fairness, that could easily mean "we'll keep him...unless we get a decent offer". Even that might put him out of our reach though :(

One Bengals writer says an NFL GM told him he still believes Palmer can net a first round pick. If that's so, you can put us out of the running in that derby as well.

(not that Palmer was one of my favorite options anyway)

Garrard would be a potential trade scenario. He has the arm and could work well in a vertical passing game if we could work out a decent trade option. Don't know if Richardson wants to spend 25 million on him over the next 3 years particularly if he expects a long lockout. Garrard is scheduled to earn 8 million in 2011, 8.5 million in 2012, and 9 million in 2013 before he becomes a free agent in 2014. If it involves our third round pick we wouldn't have one after our first rounder until the 4th round. Unless we traded down in the first for additional picks.

i see him slipping into the same scenario that garcia, culpepper, and plummer all fell into. booted out of their old team, but at an age that they can't really be seen as a guy that can be seen as a long term solution.

unfortunately for mcnabb, carolina's situation isn't going to be all that different than most others he's going to find. not many teams are going to want someone his age and his injury history (age makes him more prone). most teams will want a long term solution. i'm thinking maybe minny, but they just went through dealing with farve. don't know if they are going to be willing to go the old QB route again.

truthfully, i don't really see any teams that aren't desperate looking for him.

truthfully i'd rather have garrard. cheaper, younger, and not as damaged.
