Panthers hire assistant o-line coach

I notice that overall there seems to be a major effort to hire coaches that have played in the NFL, I suspect this is based on the belief that a guy who has actually played in the NFL might be able to do more hands-on teaching of how to play a position and provide extra "tips and tricks" to younger players?

If you're not going to have veteran players around to fill this role, then the next best thing is to have coaches that have played at the NFL level to do this.

Leonard Ray Brown, Jr. (born December 12, 1962) is a former American football offensive lineman. He played college football at Arkansas State University and played in the National Football League with the St. Louis Cardinals, the Washington Redskins, the San Francisco 49ers and the Detroit Lions. He announced his retirement January 14, 2006 after 20 seasons, the same day he started a playoff game for the Redskins. He is one of the oldest players to start a playoff game at the age of 43.[1]

He was hired as assistant offensive line coach for the Buffalo Bills on January 17, 2008. He was not retained by the Bills after the firing of head coach Dick Jauron.

Brown was hired as offensive line coach for the San Francisco 49ers on February 4, 2010.

Pro Bowl selection (2001)

All-Pro selection (2001)

fwiw...

daringantt Talked to former Panther Geoff Hangartner about Brown yesterday (worked together in BUF). Reviews were favorable. Said he communicates well.

daringantt Second person to tell me this in last half-hour. RT @lexsant Ray Brown one of the best guys you'll meet

also, worth noting that he retired after the '05 season but then was brought back to work with that redskins as an oline coach in '06 and was considered a player-coach when he was a player and was used to mentor the guys.

couple decent reads on him...

his focus in san fran was going to be working with the OTs and TEs.

seems like a good hire and at 48 years old a good counter to the 60 year old matsko.

I guess it sounds promising. He certainly has one of the toughest jobs on this team.
