Patrick Peterson Meeting With Panthers

The Saltman

Recommended Posts

As the NFL has enabled the passing game to become even more dangerous via rules changes, CB has become an even more valuable position. I tend to agree that a shutdown corner is more valuable these days than a dominating interior Dlineman. I guess in a way we are lucky that the two areas (excluding QB) where we have the greatest need are the same two postions played by Fairley and Peterson.

Important Question: How much of what the Jets do on defense is possible because of Revis (and to a lesser degree, Cromartie)?

This is so funny in 2002 when I was pimping Quinten Jammer and talking about coverage sacks people were so in love with Peppers they kept saying coverge sacks were over-rated. Now people are pimping Peterson and scoffing at the dominant D-lineman. I guess things DO tend to be cyclical. :D

At this point I would rather have Peterson over Fairley. I have a bad feeling about Fairley, and I don't really have anything to back it up, other than the speculation of him possibly being somewhat dirty, and my own personal question mark of his work ethic and how good he wants to be, and how committed he is to getting there. I think Peterson would be a great pick. Yet, I can see Fairley working out good too. That's what sucks about this draft, is it's far from clear cut.

Nothing is ever for sure but there have been far more highly rated DT's come into the league and disappoint in a big way than there have highly rated CB's. Seems like high rated CB's at worst turn into reliable starters while the highly rated DT's can many times completely disappear from the league within a few years. That may not be the reality but it sure feels that way.

Peterson is slighty overrated based on his actual play, verses Alabama Greg McElroy, Julio Jones, and Marquis Maze decimated him as Peterson allowed 9.9 yards per catch and also commited a silly pass interference penalty against Maze that gave Alabama another first down. Peterson is still a very good corner and by no means do I think he will be a bad corner but he may not be as good as many think he will be. He allows 58.2 yards per game which is good but I like Aaron Williams from Texas. Williams gave up a mere 38.7 yards per game at Texas. Williams is projected to go in the second and if the Panthers are able to trade down and acquire a 2nd, I think Williams would be a good option to replace Marshall. Texas has produced some good corner backs in the past like Aaron Ross, Quentin Jammar, and Nathan Vasher; and I think they may have produced another one in Aaron Williams. Williams is 6-1 but only 189 lbs. However what he lacks in weight and strength he makes up for in speed with a 40 time of 4.44. Williams in my opinion would be a better addition for the Panthers based on his ability to play just as well if not better than Peterson and other players still on the board if the Panthers kept their first round pick and some how traded back into the second round or if the Panthers traded down in the first and acquired a second round pick.

I am actually sitting in class now at LSU and I have been to almost every game PP has played in since hes been here. We all know how talented he is, and his freakish athleticism. In highschool and NFL scout said he was the best athlete he had every seen at such a young age. The only negatives I can find on him is that he tends to cramp alot due to a low body fat level and gases out early in games from playing special teams. Also, some scouts say he takes too many risks...but these are all things that can be fixed through coaching. The proof is there though, last year in Georgia he shut down AJ Green for the entire game. He has shut down Julio Jones multiple times. The only TD julio had against LSU was once this year and once last year in bama, when PP was out due to cramps. Fwiw, he might be the only sure pick in the draft. fwiw

Um, this year Jones, Maze, and McElroy burned him dude.
