Riveria wants to run the 3/4 at times***Kurb edit..jump to page 3 for smarts***

We ran the 3-4 at times here last season, so this isn't exactly ground breaking.

Nah.. We rushed 3.. but we didn't have 4 linebackers on the field.. It was usually a safety in the box. Plus, a 3-4 still rushes 4 guys.. You just don't know who the fourth guy will be.

Yeah you are right, just double checked. We essentially played 75% (maybe more) of our season in the 4-3 and nickel formations. Compare that to teams like the Ravens and it's not even funny.

in short it doesn't exist. no team in the nfl runs a pure 3-4 or 4-3 and if their fans think they do they dumb as hell.

i think most fans on here see the 3-4 and see nothing but blitzes and linebackers. the casual fan doesn't understand the intricacies and specifics of nfl d linemen, techniques, skills, and body type that are required.

to run a traditional 3-4 (this is the most basic description possible) a team would need a nose tackle over center that can play two gaps. this means he can charge between the gap between the center and either guard. imagine if you were looking at him from the end zone. you'd be able to see his name if he was doing his job right.

on top of that, you'd need 2 five technique DE. These guys are basically very strong 2 gap players that can occupy blockers. the problem is that it's really hard to find three good 2 gap players for your d line, so teams vary and experiment, but hear me out for a second.

your linebacking corps is far more versatile and you can do lots of things with it. You can have a Jack OLB who only does one thing, be that rush the passer or hold the edge, that doesn't have to worry about anything else. You can have a predator OLB that just chases the ball around and doesn't worry about coverages. Inside you typically need a fast guy that can keep up with a linebacker or running back that's leaking through the front, and you need a big WIDE linebacker (shoulder with is something that never gets mentioned on this site when comparing physical attributes) that can jack up running backs.

and then there's the 4-4 which rivera played in. Imagine it as a 3-4 with a linebacker that can put his hand on the ground (predator/jack) with a safety that comes down and plays the run.

so basically what it comes down to is that the panthers do not have a single player that could play a traditional 3-4 defensive line. brayton did it in oakland and struggled. apart from playing the nose, which is one of the hardest positions to find in the nfl, you need to have a very versatile DE. ideally you want a guy like Richard Seymour. The Pats spent a first on him for a reason.

so when Rivera says he wants "elements of the 3-4" in his defense, he's not talking about specific player formations. it doesn't mean we're going to go out and trade for casey hampton or igor olshansky or anything like that.

if you take his history into consideration (3-4 in san Diego, 4-4 in chicago, jim johnson 4-3 in philadelphia) there is one consistent theme. No, it's not blitzing. It's confusion.

say it with me.

that's what rivera is going to bring. now i'm not one that thinks the panthers didn't blitz, but they weren't great about disguising it.

i wrote a mega post once about how defenses now had to disguise what they're doing due to the nfl nerfing them and offenses evolving. that is what rivera is going to bring.

so in closing don't get butthurt if the panthers don't sign a 350 pound nose tackle and some DEs you gay baby.
