Veteran QBs: Picking the right one

Here's the question. Do you sign a FA QB with the idea that you're going to start him, or are you looking for someone who can be a quality backup in case Jimmy Clausen struggles?

If it's the former, then you want to find a Jake Delhomme somewhere. Maybe you go after Hanie in Chicago or Dixon in Pittsburgh. If it's the latter, then Volek makes sense. Then again, they may try to split the difference, in which case you can expect someone like Brody Croyle or Rex Grossman.

Just my 2p...

i think you look for some guy to actually compete for the long term starting gig....at least that should be priority #1. this is the guy that you give the starting job to right away. then you work on getting someone with an experienced set of eyes on the sidelines to help out.

Our offense is coming from San Diego. Pretty tough for Clausen to pick up his 2nd O in 2 years and be expected to perform better than he did last year.

Sign Billy Volek and install him as the game 1 starter and you have someone capable of running our offense from the first day of training camp.

When we have a QB on the roster ready to unseat Volek, then Volek gets the clipboard back.

No Volek, then A Smith or Bulger perhaps. Orton only if the Broncos are ready to bend over in a trade.

Jay Cutler was traded, not a FA...

I agree with most points in this thread though. In my opinion, we should go with a stopgap veteran this year to be a mentor for Jimmah and if/when he doesn't work out, help out the next draft pick we take. I'd rather not pick up another Delhomme...lets develop our own QB for once. For this year, bring in a vet like Volek, Bulger, McNabb (if he doesn't want a HUGE contract, it'd be worth it for a medium range contract), A. Smith, Orton (if the trade price is low), etc. who can start if we need them to, but will really just be here for experience and backup role to whomever we end up putting our chips on from the draft.

you can never expect many FA QB's that are real franchise QBs to ever hit the market.. Jay Cutler was an extreme exception..

so I wouldn't draft a QB solely based on that info...

I for one wanted Cutler when he was available. Your telling me the Bronco's would not have liked to have Pep. But when i look at who could be available i think Alex Smith is the guy. He has more starting experience than Volek. He has more left in the proverbial tank than Bulger. I think he would make a good stop gap that can start for us on day one. I am begrudgingly being patient with Pickles. Fox could have gave 2 schits less about developing a rookie QB for a team he was not gonna be coaching. It showed.

With a new coaching staff and giving Alex a new lease on things outside of the Bay we could f around and get us a legit still fairly young QB. I mean the dude is only 26. And pleeez do not compare him to David Carr. That poor bastardo was ruined in Houston. Two hundred and sixty six sacks would have many rethinking their career choice. San Fran took care of Smith. The things they did that stunted his development was the OC and playing time merry go round. But he still has a pocket presence and is not GUNSHY. Boller and Carr lost theirs.

i still can't believe all the "i want billy volek" crap that goes on.

the dude is horrible. he's a lifetime backup that wasn't worth getting the start in his prime. now he's 35 years old and people start slurping him like he's some frikkin messiah.

he's a whiny ****** who got pissed because tennessee didn't want to hand over the starting gig to him because he was lazy as a starter and wanted some competition. they brought kerry collins in to compete and instead of acting like a true competitor he asked to be traded. he and everyone else knew that collins would have gotten the start because, believe it or not, collins had the better work ethic. titans traded him to the chargers for a 6th rounder which is only slightly more expensive than a can of pringles.

so some of you might be happy bringing that clown around, either as a starter or as a "mentor" for our younger guys, but i'm actually hoping that they get us someone that will actually allow us to compete and have something worthwhile to offer our young QBs other than "when times get tough, run."

oh...and just in case someone wants to know who i think would be better than volek, here's what i've said in a couple other threads.

for competition: gradkowski, tarvaris jackson, grossman, thigpen, moore, alex smith, maybe derek anderson

carrying the clipboard: pennington, bulger, josh mccown, seneca wallace

No one said he was a "messiah" wants wrong with us using him for a year? And he's probably the cheapest of the Vets.
