If we draft AJ Green and keep Steve Smith, what will be the starting lineup at WR?

fact remains there are some solutions in FA to every position we need... (except QB and WR)

if we are talking about team needs, then there is no way Fairley is the pick over Peterson..

so the Fairley camp using "team need" as a reason still don't have a leg to stand on..

we wouldn't just have one of the most lethal running games in the league, we would also have one of the best WR corps in the league. add in a good pass catching TE and it would be a thing of beauty, esp. when you have an OC with a clue.

of course there is that QB thing to work out, but anyways....i can very much see us drafting green. still think that is the best thing to do. load the offense with talent for whatever QB we end up getting that doesn't suck.

Why continue to pick up people to throw to when you're still trying to find somebody to throw?
if there were better QB choices available then that would be a good move, but there aren't. we can't put everything on hold until we find a good QB. get everything ready for the QB to come in.

My post before that one acknowledged and addressed the inability to make a dplash at QB outside of somebody stepping up during the season.

More so why buy more crayons to color without paper or walls to draw on?

I'm not so sure, hands down BPA, we need help on O.

Not really. You may think so, but pretty much every expert ranks them at a comprable level. In fact, many actually rank Fairley higher than Green. So really, it's just the personal preference of the Green supporters that say this.

I will give you that it seems Green is the safer pick since there are concerns over Fairley's maturity, but that's what the pre-draft process is designed to figure out. I'm sure the team will do their due diligence and determine how risky Fairley really is and not base their decision on reputation.

DT and CB are equally "unworthy" of #1 pick, going by historical standards. A WR was taken #1 more recently than a DT. The "you dont take *whateverposition* #1 overall" argument just doesn't work anymore. Especially with a rookie salary cap incoming (quite possibly this year), and no QBs worth the #1. Bowers was good this year, but I've heard as much reason from various "analysts" not to take him #1 as reasons to take him. And we need a WR more than DE. We have (some) young proven talent at DE (CJ). We have no young proven talent at WR.

This used to be the case, but the guys at NFL Network were talking about it the other day, and they brought up a very good point. They said that the reason why those positions were historically not good #1 picks is because of the cost of a #1, so the value was poor. But with the coming CBA and rookie pay scale, that will no longer be the case. Taking a CB, for instance, will not be as cost prohibative as it had been in the past.

Meanwhile, Green, in my opinion, is the best available talent. He is the next of the elite receivers in the mold of Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald. Steve Smith is a rapidly declining player, so it's not like the Panthers don't need a wideout.

Walterfootball.

******1. A.J. Green

WR

Georgia

*May be the most *talented wideout prospect since Calvin Johnson.

******2. Patrick Peterson

CB

L.S.U.

*True playmaker who's built like a linebacker yet runs like a corner.

******3. Robert Quinn

DE

North Carolina

*Outstanding athlete with the tools *to be an elite pro pass rusher.

******4. Marcell Dareus

DT

You understand correctly.

Shame for us. No one was more entertaining on the practice field. Minicamps won't be the same without him

Alabama

*Capable of wreaking havoc *in *a backfield from multiple positions.

******5. Nick Fairley

DT

Auburn

*Dominant interior pass rusher a la Kevin Williams or Gerald McCoy.

******6. Prince Amukamara

CB

Nebraska

why would you wait for walls to buy the crayons?

Gettis/Smitty #1, Smitty/Lafell #2, Green #3

See how it goes from there. Goodson needs to be in the slot as well.

If our offense is creative enough of course (hopefully)

I think Green would actually do better here if Smith stayed here. It would take a lot of heat off him to live up to his expectations early, something you really have to be careful for when picking someone #1 overall with his kind of 'hype'. Expectations alone can f**k up a player. Patience has to be learned and understood. Training camp/practice will determine a lot as well, whoever has better chemistry with the QB.

If he excels, he can be switched with LaFell. LaFell is still very important so really they all need to play because with 89 gone, it will be him, Gettis and Green. Now that lineup (seasoned a bit more) has the potential to be real nasty.

I'm stuck between Green, Fairley and Darius right now.

My point is that it would be foolish to rule Green out.

I'd love to have Green. And to be honest, if we had anything at DT, I would be much more on board with taking him #1. But we don't have one legitimate starter at DT, and despite the hope that we can get one in FA, it is far from a sure thing. So. I think we need to take a guy that we are guaranteed to be able to get and should reasonably be expected to start from day one...and give us that disruptive force in the middle we are lacking.

My only concern with Fairley is his dedication and maturity/work ethic. I have heard some question it, although it seems to be generated more from the dirty label he has than from any actual accounts of problems. But it's definitely something that needs to investigated and answered completely before even thinking about taking him #1. God forbid we end up with another Albert Haynesworth on our hands...at #1 money.

With all of that said, I think a lot of us will be changing our minds on some of these prospects as more is learned about them during the draft process.
