Trades and the CBA (that includes Steve Smith)

I probably should have put this in the smitty thread, but...

Even if the Panthers wanted to trade Smith — and there’s no indication at this point they want to — they can’t until the start of the new league year on March 4. However, the new league year can’t begin until there’s a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) in place between the owners and players.

Hence, no CBA means no trades.

If the Panthers were to move Smith they’d almost certainly want to do it before the NFL draft in April, which will take place regardless of whether there is a new CBA in place. If the CBA doesn’t get settled until after the NFL draft, that likely would preclude the Panthers from trading him since they would have missed out on an opportunity to get draft picks. Well, at least not draft picks for 2011. Hypothetically, if a new CBA is reached in March, the Panthers could always move him for picks in 2012, but I’d be a little surprised if they do that. At that point, why not wait until next offseason to move him?

Steve and Chud reportedly met at BOFA today. Might as well get the notion in your heads that Smitty will not be moved.

I'm sure Smitty liked hearing that we want to attack teams on offense and be innovative. He probably said "don't even try running those damn "smoke" plays, teams haven't fallen for that s*** in years".

I don't think he'll be traded, but I think he may be moved...to the number three spot.

I hope by "number 3 spot" you mean the slot because Smitty is still the #1 WR on this team.

In ability? Yeah.

In age, and dependability? That's where I worry.

I think the best way to use Smith this season is not to ask him to play every down. That way, he's more effective on those downs where he does play.

It's a strategy that's extending the career of many a receiver.

Plus, from his own prior comments, I think it's what Smith really wants.

I think the horrible QB play the last 2 years has made him look older than he really is. Hines Ward is up there in age but he's still good and he was never on Smitty's level. Give him a decent QB and he's still making "wow" plays every Sunday. He played pretty well down the stretch with Matt Moore in '09 before breaking his arm. It seemed like Clausen was afraid to throw to Smitty because he was double covered.

I'd agree in part, but he's still on the wrongside of thirty with two major injuries in two years.

even if you move him to the slot, he's still going to be covered by the #1 cb of opposing teams. so it really doesn't change much about his performance or work load. you're not going to see many nickels or LBs covering him.

You will if Gettis, LaFell or both step up to the plate.

Or Green :drool5:

Somebody's gonna have to talk me into that one.

We're just as young at receiver as we are at quarterback. I don't see the need to get any younger in either spot.

Maybe but he's still attracting double coverage and making it easier on our younger WR's to make plays.

And I'm all for letting him continue doing that, but I think he'll last longer if he doesn't have to do it full time.

Honestly, if one of the guys we have doesn't step up, we have issues.

I think we got a steal in David Gettis, not sure about LaFell but he's a hell of a lot better than Keary Colbert and Dwayne Jarrett.

    • Just bring Ev back. Get good players and stop making it so hard to build something consistent. I understand this board’s fetish for a 4-3, we had a bunch of great defenses running one, but nobody ever had a good defense under any scheme with a roster this bad.
