Panthers | Talk with Vinny helped Williams improve

Wed, 17 Dec 2008 21:21:30 -0800

The Associated Press reports Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams had a conversation at the end of last season with now-retired QB Vinny Testaverde. While Williams wouldn't go into details of the conversation, he said: "It made me think about some things...That's primarily the reason I'm having the season that I'm having this year." Williams worked harder in the offseason, is in better condition and is stronger, which has made it more difficult to tackle him. During running plays in practice, Williams runs all of the way to the end zone after each play, regardless of where the team is on the field. He is now one of the hardest workers on the team in the weight and film rooms.

Remember??????????????

Oh yeah, but I thought that was just him showing Williams how to prepare for a game. Lifting in the weight room, stay focused, etc. I thought you were saying he was going over routes, how to hit the hole, etc.

It's Friday after a long work week.... it's all I've got for a defense here ;)

I would put down all the "herp derp we're spending big for coaches", routine until we take a look at the numbers.

John Fox made $6.5 million last year. Ron Rivera signed a 4 year contract at $11.4 million for the life of the deal. That is a $2.8 million average and probably increases from year to year starting at $2 million or so.

Either way, we're probably paying our ENTIRE STAFF less than we paid Fox last season.

Coordinators are usually compensated by rule about $1 million per season unless they're huge names and neither of our guys really are. It wouldn't shock me to see them under the average scale and making $750-900k per season.

Position coaches usually make well under $1 million into the $500-600k range. Schula is probably the biggest name hire and could likely be getting paid coordinator money at $1 million. Everybody else.... probably right in that range.

Your head coaching hire is your most expensive hire. When you hire an entry level head coach, your coaching budget will allow you to hire "name" coaches at other positions simply by virtue of the salary structure.

If we would have gone out of pocket for an experienced head coach who would have likely been compensated in the $3 million range if not more (Harbaugh signed a 5 year $25 million deal with the 49ers), then we'd be looking at bargain basement coaches at other positions. Pete Carroll is being paid $7 million per season, unless I am mistaken.

JR doesn't seem to be sparing any expense in the coaching department, hes getting good value. fox was a huge ripoff. this aint no Turgovac bull, this aint no Davidson jive...JR is serious. Seems like we are getting some serious experience for the price.I godda woody right now..

Great coaches makes great players.

I think that's 100% true in Pop warner and High school football. In the NFL I believe talent and the QB matters a great deal.

I believe Jacksonville and Garrad have had good coaching, but it's still not enough to get past Manning even with a depleted team and a below average coach.

I don't really care what we're paying them. I only care whether they succeed or not.

Very true on all fronts. I was only addressing the fact that some people think we're coming huge out of pocket for this coaching staff when in fact it's probably much more cost effective than the staff we had in place last season. I am REALLY high on the staff we've put together here, but not because it was financially motivated. I just think we've picked up a lot of young coaches with a lot to offer and a head coach that was overdue an opportunity to be one.

You are alking about Jacksonville and not Indy here, right?

You couldn't be saying Caldwell is below average.
