We must figure out a way to trade down

After the next few months of speculation, with the combine and other workouts. I honestly think teams will start getting draft fever and the number one spot will be worth more again.

I think we can pull a package deal for our #1 pick. possibly getting a 2nd + 3rd round in 2011 and a 1st + 3rd(2nd?) in 2012

You are joking....right?

I'd take that deal, don't think the Patriots would though. With those picks we could probably get:

#17 - DT Stephen Paea, G/C Mike Pouncy, DE JJ Watt, WR Julio Jones (maybe), any of the OTs, any of the QBs with the possible exception of Gabbert if people are still on his crotch at draft time.

#28 - CB Brandon Harris, a top 2 or 3 OT, any of the QBs with the possible exception of Gabbert, DT Marvin Austin, TE Kyle Rudolph, CB Ras-I Dowling

#33 - CB Ras-I Dowling, DT Marvin Austin, TE Kyle Rudolph, G Orlando Franklin, any of the QBs with the possible exception of Gabbert or Newton, WR Jonathan Baldwin, OT Ben Ijalana, OLB Bruce Carter (if Davis isn't progressing well), S Rahim Moore (depth), DTs Phil Taylor or Jarvis Jenkins, most intriguingly possibly turn this #33 into a 1st round pick next year

I know that a bunch of lesser players doesn't equal the impact of a star like I think Green will become, but I wouldn't be terribly upset at that trade (even though I do really want Green to be our pick. The more I watch videos of him and learn about him, the more I want him on our team. The opposite is true of Fairley and Gabbert)

I still say If I was the FO I would call New England (they need a young dominate DT/DE) and offer them the number one pick for:

Pick 17

Pick 28

Pick 33

Pick 74

Of course the point value is lower than the number 1 point value, but as everyone has said this year pick is not very valuable.

NE would still have picks in each round.

We would have 5 picks (including comp pick) in the top 100 thats enough picks to build around.

you don't just trade down for the hell of it. you trade down because you have someone specific in mind you want to get with the lower pick.

if we're just trading down to fill the roster with random mid-round scrubs, then f**k no.

There's not always a specific target trading down. There usually is in trading up, but not down.

Sometimes teams trade down because there's just nobody they feel is worth taking at that particular spot and they'd feel more comfortable with two lower picks.

I think Gabbert is our best chance for finding a trading partner. If once the experts disect his play, they deem that many of the problems that have been discussed are not as bad as it appeared at first blush (or can be reasoned away), and believed to be very coachable, some team might start to look at him as a worthy #1. Then if he blows up the combine and his individual workout (which I think he will do, his physical skills should really impress), I could easily see someone falling in love with him. Maybe someone like Cincy or Arizona would be willing to switch spots and give us their #2 this year and perhaps a #3 in next year's draft.

Either way, I don't see any other player that another team will be willing to trade up to #1 for since there are high quality pairs for each of them.

If Gabbert truly shows to be worthy of #1 (which is what it would take), then we should take him. We have zero talent at QB.

No doubt, but I'm not necessarily saying that he will be shown to be worthy of the #1 pick, just that if some team falls in love with him and believes he is worth it. After all, it only takes one team.

Trading down often sounds like a madden move, but it could actually happen this year, providing we get a rookie salary cap. It's not that much to pay for the first overall anymore. I think Fairley's going to be a bust, so if we can trade down a few spots and get Dareus/Paea, that would be optimal. I would take them over Fairley straight up if we had to.

I agree about Dareus...kid plays his tail off...never stops running until the whistle blows...has a high motor...always gives 100% every play (Unlike Fairley)
