Proehl interviews for wr coach

Not saying he wouldn't be a good coach......but I always laugh at the people that think guy's that they liked as players would make good coaches. Ricky could turn out to be a great coach but, he has no track record that I know of as a coach. If the FO believes he brings something to the table as a wr coach or asst....... then I'm all for it, but not because he's an ex-panther.

You have to take a look at the type of player they were.

Super-talented guys like Julius Peppers or Chris Gamble don't often make good coaches. I think as much as anything it's because they can never understand why guys they coach can't do things as easily as they did.

On the other hand, moderately talented guys who become better at their positions by effort and study - like a Chris Harris or a Ricky Proehl - those guys can become solid coaches.

Damn, i am short as hell. :(

Hell has a measurable height? :skep:

I agree that the less talented players make better coaches but, how many cut their teeth (in coaching) as an NFL WR coach? Like I said.....if the FO believes he has what it takes, then I'm all for it.

as fans i think we get a little over excited about ex players being coaches......i just hope this ricky knows whats he is doing cause our young WRs need a lot of work

At first I thought this too. Then I try to look at this objectively. Prohel has the tools to be a great coach, as a wide receiver he was fearless. He was flexible, always ready and tough as hell. He has so much experience and not only just experience but successful experience in the NFL. He isn't the fastest or tallest guy but he is reliable, he knew how to make it count when the game was on the line and be prepared.

I really really hope we hire him. Love the guy, always have. Seems to me like he wants to be here too, that in itself might be more than the other guy has to offer, and is a big deal in my opinion.

I thought this before we brought in Tyke Tolbert. It seemed that people were not as in favor of it as they are now, pretty much saying the same things that players don't always make good coaches. I does seem more people are in favor of having Proehl this time around.

From what I've read, he's actually been doing it already. Just as an independent trainer rather than a staff coach.

I like the idea after reading the article and remembering how Ricky played here. Has a knack for getting open and making big time catches in big time positions. I remember the sliding catch he had from his knees in the superbowl... I really like the fact that bringing him here he could help our young guys, plus he has street cred. Unlike Tony Gonzales the teams he joins seem to go to the superbowl.... here we go Ricky here we go.

I would agree with you in most cases. However, Proehl is a little different in my mind...for several reasons.

1. Ricky was a very cerebral receiver. He had an outstanding career more from hard work and being a student of the game than from just god given talent.

2. He mentored Smitty and made a HUGE difference is his development and career.

3. He has been coaching and working with WR's now at his facility.

Just my thoughts and opinion.

Man this fan base gets excited easily. I like Proehl as much as anybody does, but how much experience does he have as an actual WR coach, as opposed to training athletes in the offseason? There are probably a 100 guys who do that at these big training facilities nowadays, but that doesn't make them NFL coaches.

I wish Ricky Proehl the best of luck, but he has a lot to prove as a coach.
