A non sugar-coated look at Jimmy's season

I hope Jimmy does turn it around so a bunch of people have egg all over their faces. People keep saying he sucked all last season, but he didn't get the first team reps in TC and took a back seat to Moore almost the first quarter of the season. So a rookie that was buried on the depth charts is going to come in a tear things up with an ill-performing OL, not to mention the most predictable playcalling in the NFL? Whatever. Not one person here says Clausen did well last season, but some of us are willing to admit the rook was dealt a bad hand in addition to his own growing pains.

Some of you have the patience of a crackhead looking for their next score.

that makes Jimmy no different than tons of rookies who didn't suck to the degree he did.

some of just don't think his hand was that bad he was dealt. In reality, b/c Moore hand a handful of crappy quarters people think that means the rest of the offense stunk and that is verified by Moore's bad quarters. Jimmy had it pretty dang good imo overall for a rookie. The Moore lead Panthers pwned people in 2009 w/ virtually the same lineup w/ a change at the #2 WR spot. I think QB play just flat out sucked.

No one is arguing against competition.

We just don't want him handed the job. Honestly though, if we went into the season with Volek, Moore, Clausen, and Pike, like many have suggested or think we do, where do you think he ends up on that depth chart?

#3 w/ Pike on the PS.

Moore had a bad 2nd half against NYG and an okay first half at Tampa before he was pulled. 2 bad quarters of play and people use that as an excuse to put him out of the league and as an excuse that our offense was doomed the whole year.

People forget we were winning 16-14 in the first half of the NYG game. We only had 20 rushing attempts and Dwayne Jarrett was our second leading receiver!!!

I won't go on for pages about it or even argue ad nauseum but much of this argument is irrelevant. Football isn't scored by how many passes you throw behind the line, or for short distances versus long ones. The game is determined by scoring points. You can throw 20 passes short but if it results in numerous 3 and outs and for 0 points you haven't accomplished anything. If a quarterback comes in and throws 4 passes and 3 of them go for touchdowns, you have 21 points and are in the game. If you throw 50 passes and score 0 points, they were ineffective and largely wasted particularly if you didn't move the chains and at least change field position.

So why not argue about things such as number of 50 yard drives, percentage of passes that went for first downs. How about number of scoring drives as a function of passes thrown. TD to INT ratios or other things that actually matter and are what we judge the effectiveness of a quarterback.

Weinke hands down could throw for 300 yards a game no problem but he wasn't able to score points and win games or even make them close. If you don't throw any touchdowns or at least drive the ball in the redzone where you score a field goal or run the ball in, you are lousy no matter how many passes you complete between the 30s.

At least then, this discussion would be about things that matter in a game and create offense ie. points.

When you look at Bradford for example versus Clausen in terms of points generated by the offense, multiple TD games etc, then you get a feel for how effective a quarterback is during a game. Otherwise stats like number of completed passes behind the line or other information is really irrelevant.

You guys can do better. LOL

really well said.

Clausen could put up good numbers next year and people will still call for his head
if he can get us down the field, get us in the end zone, and get us wins....i'd be calling for him to be crowned QB of the future. i would rather he do well than suck. i criticize him because he deserves it. he sucked. granted he wasn't all by himself in sucking, but he still did this team, nor himself any favors. i just wanted to see improvement and increased potential last year. my expectations were pretty low for him and he couldn't meet the low standards i set for success. that was disappointing.

i don't know where he'd end up on the depth chart with those QBs, but i have a good feeling we'd be drafting in the top 5 the following year.

don't peg me for a moore lover, but if those are the QBs we happen to go into next season with, i see moore beating the competition. i can't see volek beating out both moore and clausen.

It looks like the play was designed as a run to the left. Clausen was supposed to hand the ball off to Sutton, but for some reason he thought it was a pass play. That's my guess anyway.

Good call. After looking back appears that you were right.

Who do you realistically think we get or who do you realistically want us to get to be in the QB stable this year?

I know you asked him but my opinion is that we don't have very many options other than keeping what we have...

I don't really like any of the rookies where our draft picks currently fall, and I think the FA market offers little to nothing in way of improvement, and maybe only temporary bandages...

At best, we can sign an older guy to be a mentor/start if our guys show nothing...

I blame Andrew Luck for all this if he would have came out. Their would be alot less threads on this board. Clausen nuthuggers and Moore suckers would all convert 2 Luck lovers. Damn you Andrew look at what your doing 2 us.:(:(:(

Naw. I get called a Moore sucker but I was never on the Luck wagon.

I value anyone's opinion on this that is realistic but I specifically want his answer because he has shot down everyone so I am curious as to who he thinks/wants to be here.

I personally think we go in with Moore/Clausen/Pike/Vet (Bulger, Volek) and out of all that I think the depth chart looks like Moore/Vet/Clausen with Pike getting on the PS.

I just don't see many upgrades in talent out there and I think Moore is better than his performance this past season.

He started week 3, that's a back seat to Moore for 2 games. 2 games is 1/8 the season, not "almost the first quarter"

I tend to agree, but if he doesn't get it done again (if we even bring him back) then we'll be pretty desperate for SOMETHING next offseason if Clausen doesn't improve... but I think he has a good chance to...

    • Scary how bad the TMJ and Mingo picks were and how similar the XL pick seems to be. We’ve seen how Coker and Thielen and heck even Diontae were able to have great games with Bryce and yet we seem to draft these RAC, big, athletic projects instead of guys like Downs and McConkey. It’s almost bizarre but it seems like we got the worst of the Seattle brain trust that just want to find the next Wilson or Metcalf or ignore the OL until it physically hurts. It takes too long even when we finally do something right and then you realize we’ve got a good OL but now we give up 30 points per game. This draft better be a multi-bagger.
    • Honestly, every year I watch less closely as I think they are less and less informative of how successful a player will be. Combine superstars who go on to have successful in the pros usually already had success in college.
