A non sugar-coated look at Jimmy's season

He did, and I think he played decently against those two teams. However, ultimately he didn't get us wins against them so it's hard to say much about that other than, "Well... decent effort, better luck next time."

here's the problem with that plan. we use some lame stop gap option like volek for a couple years while we HOPE that clausen (or pike) grow into a franchise QB. what if that doesn't work? what if clausen or pike never grow to that job (again, which i have no confidence in their being able to do)? what do we do then? start all over doing the same futile thing?

Volek would buy time. Clausen gets developed while we constantly look for the franchise QB. Giving up on guys too soon is just as toxic as staying with duds. I guess we are on the same page, but looking at different angles.

Clausen had to deal with a lot of pressure due to extremely poor o-line blocking. I have no problem with Clausen throwing the ball away, checking down, getting sacked ect, when the o-line totally fails to protect him in any way.

My problem with Clausen is his play when he had good protection, and single coverage on Gettis/Lafell, and he threw to the check down. Unacceptable. When you clearly have single coverage on a WR going deep, and you have protection, you throw to that WR and let him make a play. Period. Jeff Davison wasn't a good OC imo, but he got a raw deal with Clausen. I couldn't figure out why Clausen wasn't throwing to Gettis/Lafell in single coverage on go routes and and stop and go routes. It nearly drove me insane. I finally got to the point where I didn't care anymore why he wasn't throwing to them. Week 9, we played the Saints. They did the same single coverage bs that makes me loath Clausen for being an idiot. Clausen throws a stop and go to Gettis in single coverage, and I nearly had a heart attack because I had waited for it all season. Go to 0:41:

That is all Clausen had to do for the entire season. Throw to Gettis in single coverage. That's it. Sure the o-line was sh!t, but sometimes he had time. Give me Clausen's arm, and I'll go out there and throw jump balls to Gettis for the entire game. No question about it. Why didn't Clasuen do that? I don't know, but we need a QB who automatically thinks o O (Gettis - single coverage - throw to him)

Stats never tell the whole story. What I'd like to see are some stats for the O-line this past season. Come on, you amateur statisticians and wannabe analysts.

You mean the New Orleans games where we were in field goal range and then Deangelo ran backwards for -4 yards and then Clausen was sacked for -4 yards which put us out of field goal range.

The Cleveland game- he did a good job on that last drive. Of course if he hadn't threw the interception with 3 minutes left, we wouldn't have been throwing desperation passes with no time left and no timeouts.

those are all his stats broken down to a t. read them and come to your own conclusions if you'd like, but here's what I gathered:

jimmy threw 299 passes

of those passes, 69 of those passes were thrown behind the line of scrimmage. that's roughly 23% of his attempts. of those attempts, he completed 71% of them.

Way to spin it against Clausen. Didn't MM have almost as many turnovers in 3 games than Jimmy did all season?

It looks like the play was designed as a run to the left. Clausen was supposed to hand the ball off to Sutton, but for some reason he thought it was a pass play. That's my guess anyway.

He's basically starting fresh this year with Chudzinski and whoever the QB coach is. I mean, we'll bring in a vet to push him, but for the most part we just don't have a choice. He'll have every chance to improve.
