A positive spin on Clausen

with him playing in that many games i was expecting to see some sort of progression or improvement from him. he showed neither. i was high on clausen bc i believed the hype and thought he looked pretty decent on tape. but jimmy had a swagger about him @ nd that he did not show with us this past year. some throws were into tight windows an if anything he chucked the ball up to allow his wr to make play.

this is the nfl, and just bc you are covered does not mean you are not open. a good qb can throw a wr open or put it were only his wr can get the ball. i went to the chicago game and seen numerous wr open but jimmy just couldnt get them the ball, or didnt see them.this is a huge issue.( i seen this from home as well)

and remember the bears game lafell was by himself on the 1 yard line with the closet defender at least 5 yards away and jimmy still missed by 7 yards.

not another one MHS?

LET THE FLOOD GATES OPEN!!!!

Yea, I know. But I keep reading--after all has been said--about how we need Gabbert and Newton, how Clausen sucks... I suppose I hope the 35th time will be the charm--Why bother?

If we could only sign a vet before the draft, this would be a mute point.

you're right.

those factors made him look like he was throwing through molasses and chucking the ball at HIS shoulder level.

I've not given up on Clausen but how the hell can any REASONABLE Panther Fan suggest we go into next year expecting to build around him?? You go into next year HOPING he does well, but you have to already have some plans for the future that do not involve him turning around his career...

yeah and he did throw 2 of his 3 TDs in the last 3 weeks. Still, you can't seriously look at his play and go "Wow, he really improved!" He went from being okay until Chicago (where he was eaten alive) to being damn terrible until the last 3 weeks, where he had a couple mediocre games and one abysmal one. The breakdown of the stats doesn't really tell how he played in those games, either. =|

I think the last thing anyone wants is to go into next season with him entrenched in the starting role. But the coaches are goign to give him a chance to keep it through healthy competition, and I have no problems with that at all. And honestly, I won't be surprised if he looks completely different in camp and takes the job by the force of his play. Then again, I won't be surprised if he sucks either. :)

I'm curious to see if they bring in a Billy Vokek type to compete or someone like Rex Grossman. Basically, will they go with a career backup or a starter? The direction they choose will tell us a lot about what they think his chances are.

I can't understand how you saw no improvement at all, unless you were too busy looking for stuff to complain about to notice any. He noticeably improved in most phases of the game over the course of the season. He still may not be where we need him to, but he did get better.

Yes, he improved. He fumbled early and often, and fixed those problems as the season progressed.

His completion percentage in his first four games was 49%, his middle four 52%, and last four 57%. His YPA in his first four games was 4,.99, and improved to 5.3 by season's end. His rating in his first four games was 53.3, second four 58.0, and final four 64.5.

Keep hating.

His tiny hands seemed to be a consistant issue to me. He didn't turn the ball over as much....but the ball was still fumbled and bobbled.

His first 5 starts he had 1 TD, 5 turnovers.

His last 5 starts he had 1 TD, 4 turnovers.

His passing yards were pretty indentical in his first 5 and last 5. How he got those yards was also pretty indentical.

That ain't hating. Clausen was consistantly awful.

His decision making in the pocket didn't improve. His reads (or lack thereof didn't improve). He consistantly only used the sidelines (a mixture of only throwing to the sidelines and an inability to make throws from in the pocket to the middle of the field b/c of his physical limitations/mechanics).

What did he improve on in all phases exactly? Just claiming he has a QB rating that was 5 pts higher or completed 3 % more passes isn't a noticeable sign of any improvement.

I'm not gonna get involved in this thread, I'll simply say this..

Regardless of what anyone says, other rookie QBs have had seasons as bad as Clausen and gone on to do just fine. So, he'll have a fresh start next year, and we'll see what happens.

Name 3 rookies then in recent history that have been Clausen caliber awful and gone on to do just fine.

W/L record isn't a comparison of what 2 QBs are doing/showing as rookies.

How about naming me a few rookie QBs who have been placed in Clausen's position and looked good?

I would probably have to also include QBs in a worse position b/c few had a combo of the ground game, D, WR talent Jimmy was given. How many starts? There were even some this year who showed better basics/grasp than Clausen THIS year and were more productive in games(not named Bradford/Colt).

the majority of clausen's stats came during garbage time for other teams because they were kicking our asses so badly.

without crunching the numbers...I would guess his 4th Q yardage was pretty similar to what he did in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd combined.

I'm not ready to give up on Clausen by any means. But the simple fact is that Clausen was present and playing here while the QB was horrible.

QB position is not stable, somebody that can be the starter needs to be brought in. Clausen can compete for the starting job sure.

But in no way can you not bring in legitimate competition for him.
