Will Delhomme have a better season this year?

I think he'll do better.

He's gonna come out fired up either way you look at it, that's Jake, he's gonna wanna redeem himself for that playoff game.

Also, it will be another year on the new arm, i often wonder if his new arm was just sore by the end of the year, it really seems that way, and another year with it should help tremendously.

Who knows if he'll get better. Statistically, it's rare that QB's get better with age. I agree with everyone else. Adding a new QB coach isn't going to change Delhomme's stats that much. He's going to play the game as he always does.

I just hate it for the guy, because his personality is just awesome for the team. He's a down-to-earth normal guy. His spirit on the field is fantastic. I really wish he could put up those crazy stats so that he could get a little more recognition and nods.

Yeah look at Warner. He bumped around, was considered washed up, and nothing but a back-up anymore. He certainly couldn't get it together and improve. Forget injuries, systems, personnel changes or coaching changes. Nobody ever improves that much or changes???????

While I see your point, Warner had played at a high level before. He had an even better year in 2001 in St. Louis, and he had a good year with them in 1999 as well.

Jake reached 3,886 yards in 2004, his best year. That's only 600 yards more than he threw for last year. Can he play like he played in 2004? Absolutely. Just as Warner played to his potential as seen in 2001.

The point I'm making is that there's a chance Jake could play as he did in the days of old, but that won't be all that much better than how he played this year. I know you can't measure a quarterback's worth in terms of yards and touchdowns, but I think Jake's past statistics point to his ability to be a better than average quarterback.

Warner he is not.

I don't really know if Jake has been or ever will be a GREAT QB. He has had the benefit of a good D, an explosive running game, and the best receiver in the NFL. I just think that next year he needs to minimize mistakes. The Panthers are never going to ask him to throw 3 TD's and 300 yards in every game. All that we will ask of him is to not make a cluster of mistakes in a single game.

That's all well and good, except that it seems to me most of Jake's mistakes happened as a result of his decision making, not his throwing ability.

I think overall he is going to stay about the same. He will have his up games and his down games. I just hope he doesn't throw 5 picks again in the big one.

Potential varies a lot from year to year based on a lot of factors. Injury being number 1. In 2001 Warner had a passer rating of 101 with a 69% completion rate (WCO offenses often inflate completion percentage and YAC). The next year he has a 65 passer rating only plays 6 games and has 3 Tds and 11 Ints.

Roll forward to last year in Arizona's system in 2007 he played 14 games has a completion rate of 62%, a passer rating of 89. In 2008 that improves to a completion percentage of 67% and a passer rating of 97. Five percentage points and 8 points higher.

How does this relate to Jake who has played for one team in 2 different but similar systems?

Jakes numbers this year were not that much lower than Warner's were in 2007. This year Warner is healthy, completely recovered, had good talent and his numbers improved. Jake can do the same thing. Will he ever have a 67% completion rate or a rating of 100 for a season? Likely not. Our system is not primary passing, we don't have 4 quality receivers who get the ball and we don't dump off the ball underneath all the time like most WCOs do. Still if Jake improved 5 percentage points in his completion rate and his passer rating were around 90 (amount of improvement Warner made with essentially the same team), that would excellent.

How will he do that? Really just eliminate the 2 or 3 games each year where he stinks it up. If you take those away he would be close to those numbers for 2008 even while he recovered from surgery and was awful rusty after almost a year layoff.

From what you can glean from television you wouldn't have a clue about his decision making. You don't know what play was called, whether receivers ran the right route, where the ball was supposed to go or anything else. From a television angle you can't even see the whole field most of the time. So to say you could tell it was a bad decision versus a poor throw is ridiculous. But you are in good company. Most people think like you do although educated analysts and guys who watch coaches' film for a living would tell you that what you can see on television doesn't give you a good idea of what should of happened which is the decision-making part. All you see is the result of the play.

Also consider that a majority of his interceptions this year were tipped balls which most of the time isn't the quarterback's fault. I was always taught if you can get your hands on the ball, you should catch it.

I don't agree...I think the ones that I believe were mostly on him (IE not the one vs Chi for example or several of the TB ones) were more bad throws than bad decisions (the Cards game was both). If you read that article after the Raiders game where he explains what happened on the INTs he pretty much says that after he watched the tape, all but one was just a bad throw not a bad decision. The KC one stands out to me as a bad decision.

That being said, anybody expecting him to throw over 4,000 yards (or any QB on a team ran by John Fox), don't understand/don't like/refuse to admit of the reality of a offense based upon the run, and Steve Smith.

You're right. I wasn't in the Huddle; I didn't call the plays. I couldn't see the entire film and the coverages, nor do I have access to the coaches' tape.

Perhaps we should only the priviledged few who have access to such things voice their opinions on the Interweb.

Jake is just average not great, god I wish he was great but he is just average. Can an average Quarterback win a superbowl it's possible. The only thing is if your defense is average your quarterback better damn well be great. If your quarterback is average your defense and running game better be great. Jake needs to spread the ball around better than he does, and this team would be alot better. Jake is a great backup, we need a superstar quarterback period.....

So the answer is he will be the same as last year: AVERAGE...
