Kiper has us taking Fairley, McShay has us taking Bowers

Will be interesting. I suspect whoever we draft ultimately holding out because none of the guys would be a #1 pick overall in a normal year. But I am sure they will still want #1 overall money. I hope it is not a problem but I foresee this being a big issue. Suh got $40 million guaranteed - none of these guys are worth that.

I agree we are screwed from a contract perspective unless we are able to trade down which seems highly unlikely.

Since people don't want Fairley because he got a couple penalties, I guess we should not pick Bowers because he got a few facemasks, Gabbert threw a bad pass, Green dropped a pass and Peterson got beat. Awesome. Any more nitpicking?

But seriously: how many of you guys want a nice friendly DT who is a great guy and a hard worker but can't provide a pass rush or stop the run consistently? You do? OK, have Nick Hayden. I'll take Nick Fairley.

I don't think it's so much that we don't want him as much as it is we aren't sure if JR will want him. He's MOSTLY been a character guy and the personal fouls and dirty play don't really fit in here.

The other guys' faults (dropped passes, bad passes, getting beat) all seem to be on field issues that can be corrected with technique adjustment, studying, practice, etc but being a dirty player is often a flaw much deeper.

I'm not taking sides just saying.

NFLN has us taking Bowers, per Charles Davis.

Still waiting on Mike Mayock, draftcountdown.com.

Hurney, ugghh.

If we go Defensive End in this draft Hurney needs to be blown out of Charlotte as he should have been after going for Stewart 2 years after taking Dwill #1.

So in the last 5 years we'll have gone in the 1st round:

2006, RB

2007, LB

2008, RB

2009, DE - Yes we took Everett Brown in the 2nd but we gave away a 1st round pick to select him.

2010, No 1st round pick

2011, DE - If Bowers is selected.

You can't keep spending your #1 picks on the same position. Only Matt Millen and the Lions were supposed to be ignorant enough to do this. Hurney needs to go back to Cap management as we've needed new talent evaluation in BoFA for several years now.

Edit: never mind Hurney completely screwed the pooch on Cap management with the Peppers debacle so he can't do that either.

Was looking for Davis's logic behind his projection that we would take Bowers over Fairley and couldn't find anything.

McShay didn't seem to have much logic behind his other than "they need a pass rush" which in my opinion is a secondary concern to our lack of talent at DT.

Nearly everyone picking Bowers to us looks at Peppers leaving, assumes we need a replacement and stops there.

Johnson isn't a freak like Peppers, but he's pretty damn good.

Yeah, Charles Johnson is the forgotten man... people don't seem to realize he had more sacks and more pressures than Peppers did this year.

I consider Charles Davis to be pretty well informed, so I'm suprised he would overlook CJ and think DE is our biggest need with Fairley on the board?

Only two things I can think of are:

1. People like patterns. Davis sees that the last time we hired a DC to be our HC he came in, grabbed an elite DE and built a dominant line. Now, we just hired a DC as HC...

2. He might not see much past Johnson. Hardy is young, Brayton is solid, but declining. Brown is solid but hasn't blown up.

DT should be >>>>>> than DE though, if the talent level is comparable, I definitely agree.

I reckon we can get a DT lower in the draft plus theres a decent group of FA DT's. DE isn't that great of a need and its not a great QB class. Leaves me thinking we pick Peterson or Green. Imagine how bad this team could have been for years if we didn't have Smith catching those crazy ass lobs from Jake. We need to replace Smith sooner rather than later or we could be in trouble. We also seem to be able to pick up CBs in the lower rounds, add that to the talent coaching the secondary (Meeks and to an extent McDermott) I think we can get by without a stud CB.

I like the idea of taking Peterson and a couple of FA DT's to make the defence a top unit but I think the smart move would be to find Smiths replacement.

Watching sports center now and McShay just answered a question on why he put Bowers ahead of Fairley..

-thinks DT is only slightly a bigger need than DE

-thinks Bowers is clearly the better player, and is worried that Fairley might be a one year wonder

I don't think people understand how big our need is at DT lol. I do agree that Bowers is a better player, though. I'm really starting to get worried about Fairley being that one year wonder everyone is talking about.

i think it could be bowers is more the product of a good Dline. you take him away from those guys and you would see his production drop a lot.

DT is not slightly more of a need than DE.

dude is speaking out of his rump.

The irony being that Bowers is also a one year wonder.
