Funny enough, I think one of the reasons is that (by peoples own admission) they would be more willing to go the extra mile to help a dog, cat, etc. rather than a person.

Not funny at all. I would be much more willing to help a dog. I would give a stray dog food long before I'd give a bum money. I'd give that dog a warm place to stay for a night before I'd let a stranger into my house. Would I save a human baby before a dog, yes but that is an extreme instance, most the time I wouldn't. People are aware dogs are not. People can explain things and rationalize, dogs cannot. Because of this people simply do not posses and cannot feel the same level of fear as an animal. Obviously, most people put themselves in pooty situations, most dogs do not. Dogs cannot help themselves, most of the time people can. I know there is situations where sometimes this may not be true but I am talking in terms more often than not. One thing they both have in common is people create all their problems.

Here in South Carolina it's really bad. All of the volunteers at the Humane Society and at the vet's office I work at part time are from up north, and we all shake our head at the way pets are viewed down here. Been in an argument or broke up with someone? Kill their dog or cat. It's accepted around here. Really sad.

heard a story on the news about some guy that flipped out because of his girlfriend and killed her dog...

The human baby scenario is basically laughable, as you have no idea if that baby will one day grow up to become a serial killer or bum you so obviously despise...

Dogs can create their own problems too, like running out into an interstate... It may not seem like they do it as often, only because they are primitive beings for the most part, and all of their decisions involve survival basics such as risk/reward and food procurement...

It seems to me that you, and others here, try to rationalize things about dogs on a human level, and are totally naive to the concept that dogs are animals...

It isn't like I go out and kick puppies for fun... It is a simple scenario... Save the dog or the person... How anyone can pick the dog is a sad testament to the human condition....
