Getting to know the Jim Johnson 4-3

Well if they do keep Beason at MLB it'll be interesting to see how they play the linebackers differently

If TD recovers from his ACL(im wondering if he will...) they should be a scary bunch. I am really looking forward to what they will do with Hilee Taylor and Norwood this year. Both were underutilized in the past.

Cullen Jenkins would fit the NT.

Um that's doubtful. He is a one gap DT/DE.

Don't expect to see all these different elaborate blitz schemes in the first year. I know Fox is gone, but remember one of the reasons we moved to a cover 2 was because Mike Trgovac Defense was to complicated at times, and they wanted our athletic defensive players to play in a scheme where they could do more reacting and less thinking.

That was Meeks not Rivera or McDermott. We will put in a more complicated system compared to Meeks. The difference between what we will likely put in and Trgo's system is that Trgo had too many situational reads and a player was responsible to be in different places on different plays leading to confusion and blown coverages. The system that Johnson advocated was still react and move to the ball but didn't have multiple responsibilities. And it disguises looks moreso than Meeks system did. In Meeks system guy got set and rarely moved. In Rivera's and Johnson's systems defenders are moving until the ball is snapped to confuse the offense.

Couldn't Beason be used to spy the backfield (be it the QB or RB) depending on run/pass situations? If we actually get interior pressure and pressure off the edge couldn't he go more off instincts to stave off QB scrambles or quick RB and TE dumpoffs? Then he still uses his athleticism and instincts to be in a position to make plays?

I don't pretend to have more than a basic knowledge of NFL defenses so if this is retarded my bad.

That would be a possible way to use him. However, that only allows him to make plays on scrambles and dumpoffs. In addition, if he does that every play it would be easy to adjust to. I would hope they try to have him in position to make a play every down.

smh at rotoworld..I think our LB core is better.

Panthers hired Sean McDermott as defensive coordinator.

The Browns oddly never showed interest, despite his ties to Pat Shurmur. McDermott, 36, will keep Carolina's 4-3 defense in place while likely shying away from Ron Meeks' old Cover 2 scheme. A highly aggressive coordinator, McDermott may not be able to do nearly as much blitzing as he did in Philly right off the bat. The downgrade in front-seven talent will be significant.

oh btw guys you know there are a lot of other 3 tech UT options that won't cost us the 1st overall pick and we already have an in-house guy that can work in a rotation just sayin'...

There are also decent CB options as well. I would love to have Jonathan Joseph as our #2.

The thing is, each of the top 5 has a counter part somewhere.

Fairley has Mebane in FA and Dareus in the draft

Bowers has Quinn in the draft and Johnson/Hardy/Brown on the roster

AJ Green has Jones in the draft and Smith/LaFell/Gettis on the roster

Peterson has Amukamara in the draft and Bailey/Aso/Joseph in FA

DT & CB are the only positions where we absolutely HAVE to pick someone up, whereas we have young guys sitting on the roster at DE & WR.

That said, I am starting to think Gabbert might have a chance, despite him not being a #1 talent.

I would think that our front 4 will look much better in a more aggressive scheme. If we get Fairley in the draft or a few DTs in free agency we will have upgraded quite a bit. Johnson is as good as any of Philly's and Hardy could end up being better as he gets his NFL body. And I think our linebackers match up well also. Our defense was underated because our team and offense were so poor.

CJ reminds me a little of Trent Cole
