Fox being Fox

I figured you know enough football to know ANY coach, coming into that situation would not name a starter Feb 2nd. I mean, the hate on The Golden Calf of Bristol on this board alone, most numbskulls should be in agreement with this.

Yes and no.

I'm no The Golden Calf of Bristol fan, but I'd say he looked good enough at the end of last year to at least be the presumptive starter going into next year.

But people who have watched the Panthers have all said the same thing. "If you want The Golden Calf of Bristol to have any shot at starting under Fox, you better take away Orton as an option."

Let's just say I won't be surprised if they're proven right.

The Golden Calf of Bristol played pretty decent. But not well enough to be presumed anything.

But Orton himself had some pretty good games (and pretty decent season), and easily played well enough to put a serious question in who should be the starter (atleast for this season).

If your the coaching staff ,there's no reason The Golden Calf of Bristol should be presumed the starter with how few games he played, how well Orton performed, and the fact that they haven't had time to fully evaluate either.

uhh, I don't know why a new coach would name a starter at this point no matter what. he hasn't even gotten a chance to work with either of them.

I'm sure there will be a competition in camp. if past results are any indication I doubt The Golden Calf of Bristol wins it, but hey, it is possible.

The Browns have already come out and said that Colt McCoy will be the starter going into next season.

Some teams and GMs prefer that stability. It's a philosophical decision.

True, though it's quite a different situation I think. It was an easier decision in Cleveland. Not so out in Denver, I think. Big pluses and minuses both ways.

If it were my decision right now, my default choice would be to continue with The Golden Calf of Bristol.

That said, I'm not a big The Golden Calf of Bristol fan. I still don't buy that he'll ultimately be successful at the NFL level.

But would I keep him as a starter based on the current circumstances? Yes I would.

Orton is a very safe, non-spectacular quarterback. It's not that he'll necessarily win you a lot of games. He just won't lose them for you.

Essentially, he's the ideal John Fox QB.

I'd take him here happily as a stopgap, but knowing Fox it wouldn't surprise me if he becomes a long term starter in Denver.

Shouldn't be the long term plan.

But if The Golden Calf of Bristol doesn't show progress, and no obvious QB oppurtunity presents itself, I see no problem with Orton being the starter for a few years to come. He played suprisingly pretty well, given a very poor defence, questionable O-line with below average running game, and injury.

Regardless, the intial argument ( not naming the starter) I see no issue with, given the circumstances sorounding it. Among other reasons The Golden Calf of Bristol (while showing some promise) simply didn't play well enough to seperate himself from Orton.

Thus, if there's a legitiamate question on who would be the better starter for 2011, then I see no point in announcing one so early.
