These hirings likely preclude us from mcnabb, kolb

Alex Smith is probably one of the better free agent options, but isn't near the prospect of trading for Kolb or Orton. Why all of the Kolb haters? Also, Derek Anderson had his only Pro-Bowl season under Chudzinski as his OC... why not try a reunion. I know he has been horrible on the Cardinals but aren't most players in the NFL a product of their system?

I am not a Kolb hater but I read the Eagles are shopping him for a 1st round pick so if we take him we better make sure he is our long term answer.

Alex Smith had a worse rookie year than Clausen, by nearly any measure. And his sophomore year was semi-respectable. Why would anyone want to sign him over starting Clausen again?

Don't get me wrong, I can understand why you might not want either one of them. But if you're against JC and want Smith I really have to wonder about how much emotion is going on in your decision making process.

Emotionless I guess you'd have to say if they are the same QB that Smith is a 6 year Vet and has seen and done most everything already.

Personally, I'd rather see Volek brought in.

Bingo! (as far as I'm concerned)

Smith had five different OCs in his first five years. He's still managed to pull his game out of the gutter, but not into anything close to "first overall pick" territory. It makes you wonder what would have happened had he been the 24th pick and Rodgers the 1st. Would he have just got done picking apart Atlanta?

Clausen and Smith have a ton in common as far as their rookie years go. And they both have small hands. :)

If you guys think Alex Smith would be better than McNabb... I dunno what to say. McNabb is amazing. I like Alex Smith too, the guy has a lot of moxie, a lot of heart. He's the guy that will throw an interception, get hit, and still bounce it off and produce the game winning drive. He just gets intercepted quite a bit lol. He's worth it as a stop gap imo.

Smith aside, McNabb would be a poor choice for the offensive system we're expected to run.

West Coast Offense quarterbacks rarely do well playing in non-WCO systems. The ones that have left Andy Reid's offense and gone to other offenses (Koy Detmer, A J Feeley, and McNabb) have been spectacular failures.

You have to take the system into account.

I am interested how you feel the qb can be addressed in the short run and long run.It is such an important position in the NFL.

I think it's a really lousy year to need a quarterback, given what the draft and free agent pools look like :(

My choices for camp this year would be Clausen, Pike, Matt Moore and Billy Volek. Keep the best three going into the season unless someone better gets cut from another squad.

You never know. A new offensive staff might be able to make something half-decent out of guys we already have (for a year, anyway).

I agree with almost all of this.

Keep the best 2 and Volek. We need a vet in the QB ranks. Say what you will, but he has been listening and working with Norv, Chud, Rivers, and Shelmon for the past 4 years, and vet know how was seriously missing on our staff.

True, but more than likely there will not be a CBA in place prior to the draft, meaning that we would not be trading this year's overall #1 pick. It would be a future first rounder.
