Official Panthers Coaching Staff Thread

Look at their records.

Their histories back up that they're not just blowing smoke.

I guess that depends on your definition of success. Chud had one good year as an OC in Cleveland, McDermott was just fired because his defense didn't get the job done in Philly, and Rivera hasn't proven anything as a HC on any level that I know of.

I'm not saying they're bad hires or anything, but I just can't get that excited until they show me something besides talk.

And BTW, I'm pretty sure Charlie Weis had good things to say about Davidson when he was hired by the Panthers. It didn't mean squat though.

People are acting as if we just hired Bill Bellichick or something.

Not speaking of success. Their records tell you about their approaches.

Yeah, but their records also tell how their approach worked. For some reason, the fact that all three of our new coordinators were recently fired or were about to be fired (Murphy) does not fill me with the same excitement as everybody else seems to have. We need much more than a good TE's coach to lead this offense, and this defense won't be fixed simply by calling more blitzes and playing more man to man.

PS, none of it will matter anyway if they don't find a long term answer at QB pretty soon.

GD MC I agree with you for once. I am miffed at quite a bit of the comments on new coaches. I believe Rivera is capable of running a good/great defense but other than that its all ??? Glass half-full I guess.

I know your positive moreso than most so you are confiming my fears here man!

Is Jeremy Bates a candidate for OQC or QB coach? Seahawks just fired the guy - Carroll brought him from USC to be his OC. Former QB coach for the Broncos (also called plays), Jets, and Bucs.

I don't know much about the guy.

He'd be a good QB Coach. Might get OC looks elsewhere though.

He's the son of Jim Bates (longtime NFL DC)

Our defense was pretty darn good before injuries took their toll. It will get better with who we have brought in, I think.

So we picked up some folks who had fallen out of favor elsewhere... but two of whom were very hot commodities.

Chuds was assistant head coach in San Diego and was next in line if Turner got fired. He was thought of very highly there. He may not have done wonders in Cleveland but he did decently I think for what he had, and he's been great in San Diego. He is more than just a TE coach there... he also is basically the man in the box, the eyes of Turner.

Mcdermott was a fine D coach, he just wasn't enough considering whose shadow he was filling.

We picked up a new HC. It's important to build around him with talent that has experience at their spots. It's very difficult to get lateral moves in the NFL, so. McDermott is some people's dream candidate; he was a HC wish for some of the posters here. Chuds is Rivera's man, has experience in an explosive offense that can really play differently from how it has here.

Honestly, I can't say poo about our ST coordinator cause I haven't looked into him. :P

What exactly does that mean? How much imput did he have in the game plans and play calling?

Anyway, I'll be completely convinced when I see the results on the field. Every new coach we have ever had was highly thought of by some other coach and/or players. Honestly, these recommendations don't mean much to me anymore.

That's a little too broad a net.

There are several teams that use the West Coast system as their offensive approach in a given season. Depending on load of factors, some may win a lot. Others may lose. Likewise, some teams go 4-3. Others go 3-4. Some go aggressive. Others play "bend don't break". Some teams favor the run. Others favor the pass. Etc etc etc.

Bottom Line: No one single approach is guaranteed to always win.

But that was never really the point anyway...

The point was that when Rivera says he plans to be aggressive and attacking, everything in his resume' backs that up. Hence, there's no real reason to doubt that when he says it, that's exactly what he'll do.
