McDermott is the new Panthers DC

I ventured over to the Eagles message board and it seems that most fans are happy with this firing, many wishing him the best but saying he was "just not good enough." Just curious as to why some of you are so high on him, and what the knocks on him consist of? I'll be honest, I haven't indulged too much in the Panthers' coaching search, but have been happy with the hirings thus far.

going from "bend, but don't break" to "smash kill destroy"

Capers and Fox looked at offense?

When the other team was running it, yeah.

I love the idea...

Just waiting for someone to suggest calling them "The Anger Management Defense"

I am also looking forward to what Chico and Mac can do to elevate the game of some of the lesser known defensive players with their teaching and wisdom.

Wasn't that the sitcom with Freddie Prinze? :sosp:

He likes to attack with throws to the tight end; what are some other differences we can expect?

Summary of what I expect in general can be found here.

listening to mcdermott talk eagles d about a month ago here -

his comments (and constant use and emphasis of the word 'aggressive') combined with rivera's comments at his press conference lead me to believe that the next panthers D to take the field could be diametrically opposite in philosophy to john fox's defense. considering the speed at the safety position, as well as the established talent at LB if thomas davis is back to something close to his old self, it could be a perfect marriage and a recipe for a truly daunting defense.

it's easy to feel optimistic about the future on the defensive side of the ball for the panthers.

most people like myself like the idea of being more aggressive on defense as a whole, mcdermott is known for having a good defensive mind & meshes well with rivera's philosophy. it's hard to follow a legend like jim johnson add in the injuries they have had a lb & other postions doesn't help. he won't have that same pressure here & our team wants to have a defensive identity much like the ravens & steelers

Im not so worried about what he has done as much as what he will do.. Im biased, I think Panthers' D is well above Philly's. If the players are better, wouldnt that make the DC seem that much better? Ive heard people say that we cant judge Jimmy with the situation he had this season, same is true here, no? McDermott now has better weapons to utilize, its not going to be the same result. I think its more about his attitude, philosophy, and how he does his job than his accomplishments that brought him here...

Seriously, if youre not excited about the new era coming in, you should probably go back to your old team...The next season should be alot of fun to watch...

I've been perusing Iggles forums and even a large portion of Eagles fans agree that McDerm was hurt by a lack of talent.

Of course you've always got the homer clowns who believe Philly has one of the most talented D's in the league, but it's easy to tell who those are and throw their opinions out.

A knock on MCDerm was apparently that his schemes were "too complex"

Whatever.

You could argue the flipside: Players too dumb.

The Pats always pursue smart players because that's what allows their schemes to be flexible. I suspect we'll start doing the same.

The Pats pursuing players that can play multiple positions (and occasionally, even both sides of the ball) is something about them I've liked, so I'd love for us to start taking that approach.

It certainly looks like we're going to try to.
