the hollywood foreign press, screen actors guild, etc all need to consider the fact that their shows are boring as hell. the fact that recent hosts have essentially turned them into mini-roasts is the only thing that has saved them. if you put some stale people up there with no wit (see franco and hathaway hosting oscars) it will be unbearable to watch. ricky gervais is a blessing for them - just embrace the trend and let it go on. hollywood's multimillionaires should be able to tolerate a few hours of getting mocked.
