Mort: Sean McDermott is a candidate as DC with Broncos/Panthers...

Perception is everything though. If the candidates feel that they won't be able to impliment all of their own ideas, then they're not going to be very excited about the job, especially the really good ones. I know I wouldn't if I had other choices.

Regardless of what Rivera meant, he probably should have kept that part to himself until after he had his staff together.

way too much emphasis by fans in thinking that coordinators aren't going to talk at all to him and instead go, "No you said in your meeting you'd be in charge!!"

The coordinators are informed people and will take the word of a coach in a meeting over a presser that could be misinterpreted. They'll flat out ask him, and if Mr. Scot is right, then I don't think it will be an issue.

If he literally meant, "I want to call the plays and run everything on D myself," then yes, it may be an issue. But these guys interviewing here are going to find that out for themselves first, not just go on a sound clip.

Don't matter what us fans think. Imagine that you're one of the candidates for the job. You're interviewing for a DC position on a 2-14 team and the new HC has already publicly stated that this will be his defense. Would you be excited about going to that interview? And even if Rivera explains himself during the interview, how could you be certain that he wouldn't micro manage you once you have signed a contract?

Maybe if I'm a position coach who is looking to move up it wouldn't bother me, but if I was an established DC that statement would be a red flag.

SMcD knows Riveria and has worked with him for many years so I think that this debate would not be relevant to this particular partnership.

Listen fellow Panther fans, we have been listening to press conferences the past nine years with nothing being said whatsoever. I think we should be happy that coach Riveria actually talks to the press and fans about what his feelings and thoughts are.

All I'm saying is that you're going to put a heck of a lot more stock into what you know about the guy and your interview with him and the front office than what you may not even have heard him say in a press conference. (The entire world didn't stop to tune in to that presser)

I'm not sure why I should be overly excited about Sean McDermott anyway. I would much rather have had Rob Ryan. I guess that wouldn't have been a good fit though because he's too strong of a personality. I coulnd't help but notice that he ended up on a team where he knows the defense will be his baby.

they also run a 3-4 and that may be his preference.. he has a shitload of talent on the D, there are a few reasons I'd name first..

I never put much stock into DC's thinking Rivera would be some kind of dictator.. and if you want to be a HC, who better to help you get there faster than working WITH a guy who has put multiple #1 (or 1 and 2) defenses on the field..

I just hope Rivera knows what he's doing. It's awesome that he had the #1 rated defense in San Diego and all, but that was with him having complete control on that side of the ball. As a HC, he will have to learn to delegate and let his coaches do their jobs or it won't work. I'm not saying that he won't be able to do that, but I don't know that he will either.

I hope you're right. I have always believed that the best leaders hire good people and then they let them do their jobs. I've seen a lot of very smart people screw things up by micro managing their business.

I just wish Rivera would have said that he was gonna hire the best people he could find and left it at that.

i'm pretty sure that rivera wants the best people he can find. you have to remember that the DC is running his defense & not vice versa. even if he calls the defensive plays that's no different than what alot of offensive minded head coaches like payton & mccarthy do. the DC will still help formulate the gameplan & oversee the daily operation of the defensive staff
