Mort: Sean McDermott is a candidate as DC with Broncos/Panthers...

McDermott will be executing Rivera's gameplan. The reason hes a really good fit, is because the two have worked together. In philly, he was alone, and in charge of the defense. Here he has guidance under on the best defensive minds in the game.

Exactly.

I think McDermott would shine as a DC here. No way in hell Rivera would let him make the same mistakes over and over again. They'll work together to dial in an awesome defense. Add in Meeks for the DB's and Singletary for the LB's and this defense is money.

This is really making me eager to draft Fairley #1. This is a wet dream entourage of coaches for any defensive player, regardless of position. I'll be pumped if they all come here.

Too late on that, Vikings are beating us to the punch

sounds like he'll fit right in with Foxy and never adjusting his game plan..

Just the opposite, from what I've read.

He's actually been fairly innovative with his defensive ideas (used a zone blitz, created a formation with seven defensive backs specifically geared to defend against Eli Manning, etc).

The problem has been not all of it has worked. Were the issues due to the ideas being bad, the execution was poor, or injuries depleted the depth chart?

That's the question.

BTW, am I the only one who thinks Rivera made a mistake when he announced that he was going to be running the defense? Think about it...these DC's are all trying to make a name for themselves just like Rivera did, and they want to be HC's too someday. It's hard to do that if people view you as a puppet of the HC.

McD would be a great choice, IMO.

In Philly he had the impossible task of following in Jim Johnson's wake. He had and O minded coach, so there was no one he could bounce ideas off of and his squads were still pretty good.

He runs the aggressive style of D Rivera wants, they're both decipiles of Johnson and has a very well respected D HC in Rivera to work under.

I think people are making too much of that.

Rivera essentially saying "my goal is to run the defense" in a certain way has everyone thinking he'll make the playcalls and his DC will be a puppet, but it followed on the heels of his saying his goal was "to run all the football on the field".

He's going to be a hands-on coach, and everyone who works under him will have to report to him and adhere to his philosophy, but that doesn't mean he's going to try to do everything himself.

Perception is everything though. If the candidates feel that they won't be able to impliment all of their own ideas, then they're not going to be very excited about the job, especially the really good ones. I know I wouldn't if I had other choices.

Regardless of what Rivera meant, he probably should have kept that part to himself until after he had his staff together.
