I have seen some compare Clausen to Aikman...

Not really, that's a reason to have doubts, not hate. I don't think anyone will question that he did not show much, but the hate towards him is unwarranted and premature.

And most of those that use his play as an excuse to hate also fall into one of the other categories...even though they will deny it until the end of time.

Oh, I most definately am a combo of 1, 4, and 5. You don't seem to acknowledge at all that #5 is a very legitimate group though.

Clausen did make me change me opinion on him in some aspect of the #1 group. He doesn't seem to be a brat. His attitiude impressed me. I would argue on Clausen's behalf at this point in that aspect.

this pretty much fits my feelings.

i've said before, my initial reaction to his drafting was being pissed, but then i tried to feel good and optimistic about it and did a lot of reading about him and watching what tape i could find of his time at ND. i felt good about it until i saw him do poorly...consistently poorly week after week.

i had no belief that he would turn into a superstud over night. i know it takes time, but i was hoping to see some gowth into the role and as a player. that is what i was expecting to see as a rookie and that is what would have made me feel good about him.

i saw nothing good. i saw no growth. i expect nothing more than an at best average game manager and i want more than that. we need more than that. and we aren't even close to being guaranteed that with him.

i will go on record saying that i actually hope he turns things around, mainly because i don't want to wait another 3 or 4 years before we decide to work with another QB. i don't want to wait for another couple years after that to see if the next one is worth a crap. i don't want us to sit on our collective asses hoping that another coaching staff will be able to do something with him, wathcing the playoffs come and go from the outside.

i hope he succeeds because we really have no other alternatives at this point, but from what i have seen i'm not expecting much.

i will say that what i saw this year was nothing like what i saw from ND. he also did really bad his first year there and then improved dramatically each year afterwards, so there is that hope. i'm just not counting on it and neither should the team. they should keep actively looking. he has done nothing to show that if a better prospect becomes available that we should pass up on them.

And you fall into category 3. Your disdain for Clausen seemed to grow as your excitement over Luck (and Harbaugh) grew.

Not saying his play warranted anything but dissapointment, but you went from at least trying to find something good to hope for to disparaging Clausen about the same time Luck started to become a real possibility.

What do you mean? Have I said anything other than he was a dissapointment this year. I just think the hate towards him is absurd and over the top, as well as being too early to make a final judgement.

I believe that he can still become a good player, but by no means is it a guarantee. So like everyone else, I believe we need to bring in real competition that is capable of starting if he doesn't show significant improvement, but would also be a calming force on the sidelines if he does.

I mean I think 1-5 are all reasons. You didn't list the 5th one....someone else did. I think #5 is legit and you didn't seem to be acknowledging it as so.

of course the hate is over the top.....this is a message board. Clausen could become a great player. I think it would be easier if he was taller, bigger, faster, and had better throwing mechanics......but there are examples in all sports of hardworkers overcoming all that kind of stuff. I just think if he has a shot as success he needs to find the bench first. He has a lot of subtle things he needs to work on before just trying to figure out the the difference in game speed and complex defenses.

Fair enough.

  • 9 months later...

Is it typical for a QB to flat out suck and turn it into a goof career? No it's extremely rare. All you did was find a counter example. Really you are disproving your own point.

Are there any other QBs that sucked this bad and turned it around? If not then we have one example out of thousands.

Also did Aikman have the mechanical issues that Clausen has?

See?
