Walk ons?

It doesn't really happen at the NFL level.

Colleges sometimes, but not the pros. Closest you get to that in the pros is undrafted free agents.

Only two guys I know of that came in without the benefit of college, both in the early 90s. Eric Swann (Cardinals) and Ray Seals (Steelers). there's been no one I know of since then. It was pretty much a one time thing.

Ironically enough, guess where both of them finished their playing careers?

I think that Hoover was a walk on. I remember a story that he showed up at training camp or something like that and asked for a shot.

Don't hold me to it though.

No. Hoover got a college FA invitation from the Panthers. He didn't "walk on." The Panthers select several prospects from college ever year that didn't get drafted. Few of those people make it. Hoover was one of a few that actually stuck....Nick Goings as well.

There was a guy who held a cardboard sign outside training camp one year asking for a tryout. He played DB at WCU, I think. The Observer (I think) put a picture of him in the paper, then a TV news crew interviewed him, and I think they let him try out as a PR move. He was cut.

That KR for the 'Aints a few years back was a walk on.

Don't remember his name.

Michael Lewis. Started with the Eagles (2000) then went to the Saints. He had been playing semi-pro for a couple of years prior.

You used to see more semi-pro guys getting tryouts too. Not as much these days.
