Greatest guitar riffs

Matt Foley

I love Stevie to death and play a lot like him but he wasn't that creative as far as song writing. He never reallly came up with any great riffs, he just played the blues like he was breaking out of jail

He was probably the best blues player ever, but he has some riffs that should be considered...

This list also is missing Alan Holdsworth, but he was too underground...

That's why he wouldn't make my top 10. There's nothing in his riffs that really "stand out" and make me say "wow", but it's light years better then The White Stripes and should certainly be in a top 50....

oh, and as far as the BTBAM entry, nobody can top the riffs from the Selkies: The Endless Obsession solo... nobody...

another one I thought of from the metal world that hasn't been mentioned is Machine Head's Davidian...

I'd say "couldn't stand the weather" and "crossfire" would be among the most original. I personally like the old bluesmasters approach to blues but when it comes to speed and raw electric tone SRV is tops.

I think it's hard to come up with a list of the GREATEST anything in music. Especially with all the genres of rock. I mean you could just as easily put together a greatest 50 riffs of metal, greatest 50 of alternative, grunge, blues etc etc. Plus on top of that people who don't like a certain type of music (for instance Metal) completely discredit that song or riff. Take for example the Selkies solo, I personally think it has some of the best riffs I've ever heard but people who say BTBAM is trash and refuse to listen to the riffs will just say it sucks and doesn't belong.....

Very hard to do a list like this. It all depends on the creator of the list's musical style. I think Nugent should have a few more on there, I even think Queens of the Stone Age have came up with some great stuff too that should be on there. I guess it's also a question of, are these the most popular rifts, technical riffs, creative, etc?
