My top 10 in no particular order....

Nirvana: Smells Like Teen Spirit, this riff pretty much ended hair metal...

Ozzy Osbourne: Crazy Train

Metallica: Take your pick, Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, The U nforgiven, Sanitarium etc etc...

Rage Against The Machine: Killing In The Name Of

Jimi Hendrix: Again take your pick...Voodoo Child, All Along The Watchtower, Hey Joe, Purple Haze....

Guns N' Roses: Sweet Child of Mine

Lynyrd Skynyrd: Freebird

Led Zeppelin: Stairway To Heaven

Blue Oyster Cult: Dont Fear The Reaper

The Eagles: Hotel California

I could go way past 10 but I'm also way too lazy. I think this list is good but definitely not what I would consider the BEST....

bleh, I can't believe I did that. I've always associated it with Hendrix for some reason ever since I heard it. Perhaps because the riff is so much like his guitar style. Not even a huge fan of the song the riff is just an all time classic.....

Stop insulting Hendrix by comparing a four chord riff to his style...

Maybe you meant the way the guitar sounded, but Smoke on the Water is highly overrated and not technical... at all...

Also, I didn't see any SRV on that list, which is a travesty to anyone who knows anything about guitar riffs... especially when the White Stripes made the list...

Sorry, you're right I meant sound not style. And yes I can agree having no SRV in the top 50 with The White Stripes there is a JOKE....

I love Stevie to death and play a lot like him but he wasn't that creative as far as song writing. He never reallly came up with any great riffs, he just played the blues like he was breaking out of jail
