Trade down for Newton/QB?

Lies, youre telling me you wouldnt take Newton, Gabbert or Mallet in the 6th?

No, I wouldn't.

We're likely going into camp with two guys that have less than a year's worth of pro playing experience. That's bad enough. Making the third choice a guy that has zero pro snaps? Not wise.

If you're going to take that kind of risk, that third guy better be a prototype, not a project.

There's only one guy who fit that description, and he's staying in school. Nobody else is worth that risk.

Wow, to not take a Newton or Mallet in the 6th round would be idiotic, the risk is so small at that point, and the reward could be a franchise QB. You dont find players in the 6th with half as much potential as Mallet or Newton, not to mention at the QB position.

Players the Panthers have taken after surprising draft slides:

- Rae Carruth

- Rashard Anderson

- DeShaun Foster

- Jimmy Clausen

That's not exactly a stellar list.

If the entire league passed on these guys five or six times, there'd have to be something seriously wrong.

Reality though, this is not a plausible situation. Making an argument based on something that has zero chance of happening isn't really going to help your case.

I didnt make the situation up, I was simply refuting your point that you wouldnt take any QB at any point in the draft. Sure, Newton or Mallet obviously arent sliding into the 6th round.

But dont say you wouldnt take any at any position to make your statement sound more bold and impressive if you dont mean it.

I very much mean it.

I had to argue the merits of Luck to another guy on here - one of better football minds - because he didn't want us in that spot even with Luck as the guy.

Without Luck as an option, the idea of going to next season with what amounts to three rookies at the QB spots is not a good one.

I doubt we'd go into next season with 2 1 years and a rookie.

If by some strange chance Mallett, Gabbert, Newton or Locker fell to us we might very well take them in the later rounds... but we'd go into training camp with a vet, a rookie, a 1 year starter and a 1 year backup.

there is a decent chance the rookie would beat out Pike.

no. Cam Newton is not an NFL qb. he has poor field vision when it comes to passing, not a drop back pocket passer.

Many 'experts' are now starting to finally tell the truth about the kid. He is a one read then run QB. The TD's he threw in the NC were guys so damn wide open on blown coverages any member of this board could have completed them. his massive QB rating for the year? Everyone knows QB rating doesn't mean poo. It is massively weighted on Completion %. Most of Cam's Completions were screens and dumpoffs.

The guy is not NFL ready and playing under gus malzahn (created the original wildcat) he came from a gimick offense that won't cut it in the NFL

I'm with Scott on this one.

None of the QB's in this draft is going to help this team in the next 2 years at best. Most likely 3-4. They are all projects that are not even viable candidates to start any time soon.

That is how we ended up with the Jimmy mess. He was a 2-3 year project that got thrust into the starting role way too soon. If we draft any QB this year it is just going to give us 3 unknowns again.

I know I said they could grab Locker but that is only in the hypothetical if they are dead-set on a QB, he would be the only one I would even hope the FO considered.

We don't really know that. A season under Fox told us zero about Pike.

My ideal camp roster is Clausen, Pike and two vets (one could likely be Matt Moore). Best three make the final roster. That guarantees at least one veteran presence.

I can't think of a QB coming out this year that I would be happy to have on this team. I'm a horrible insomniac so lately I've been watching a ton of games from potential picks and not one of them excites me in the least.

If we're going to draft another QB I'm convinced it will be one of the following two years - depending on who comes out when and how much / little our existing rookies display their epic fail over those seasons.
