Also, for the love of God, saying "The Offense was bad" doesn't justify drafting offense with our first pick. The offense was bad for several reasons that had NOTHING TO DO with our WR core. The biggest problem with the offense was the Offensive Coordinator and the play calling, followed by QB play, followed by injuries to the O-line.

the more and more i think about it, the more and more i would take AJ green over any of the other guys listed as 97 by scouts inc.

Fairley - one good year

bowers - one good year

peterson - don't really need him all that much

green - don't really need him all that much but one of our WRs always seems to get hurt so it wouldn't hurt to take him.

We also don't want our receiving corp to end up like our quarterbacks ended up... picking up 2nd tier, back up players, but never acquiring a true number 1 to take over. Depending on your take on the potential of Lafell or Gettis, we could be looking to get an upgrade on talent/potential preparing for Smitty's inevitable departure.

The more I think about it, the more drafting Green and trading Smith for picks makes sense.

If we can trade Smith and get something for him, it is a no brianer. We are in a rebuilding stage and he is obviously past elite receiver days and he is far from the mentor type.

We draft on talent just as much as skill so BPA does not always fit us. AE is a perfect example of Talent over skill. Newton may be as well so I would not be shocked if we drafted him. Hurneys a gambler for sure so if he thinks someone will have a huge upside he will draft him.

Well, we aren't going to get much for Smith, but his decreased value is why we need Green. I know Smith is a great competitor and he has been the best panther ever. However, lets look at the face of our franchise:

Sucker punches fellow WR Bright during a film session.

Sucker punches CB Lucas while he is on a knee at practice.

Blasts his rookie QB in the press.

Makes comments like, "I don't know if I will be back next season" to the press.

Approaching 32. A speed WR. Dropped more passes than Lafell this season. If we don't need Green this year, we will need a #1 next season. Green is the only clear #1 WR in the draft. Wouldn't it be smart to draft the one of the best prospects this decade?

The issue I see there is you're trusting Hurney to use that 2nd or 3rd to upgrade the talent on the roster more than keeping Smitty would.

I give us a 30% chance, maybe less.

Good point. How many second rounders have we drafted that turned out to be busts?? Not many. I would take proven talent over potential any day.

Unless we have someone who can throw it to him, he will be wasted.

I know it isn't very popular with the fan base, but some of our best drafts have been when we drafted best player available. Arguably, the Panthers started drafting out of necessity when we took Brown and definitely last year. You could say that the past two years we haven't drafted as well as we normally do.

As a result, I have a feeling that Hurney will go back to what has worked - BPA.

That is because we forget need when we reflect.

Folks in this thread seem to get it, but a word about the workouts anyway.

The Panthers put more stock in game performance than workout numbers. When determining where to rank a player on a draft board, that's the best way to go.

The best way to use workout numbers is to decide between players that you have similar grades on.

On the other hand, if you use workout numbers to move a guy up a round higher than you had him graded based on game tape, you're asking to draft the next Mike Mamula.
