No quarterbacks in the draft

Ok, name one project QB that turned out ok. I am talking about players that had to learn the pro system and came from solely the spread offense.

Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy and Skelton all played in the spread and are ahead of Clausen at this point. Bradford is surely ok, the rest are promising guys who are going to get the chance to be the franchise guy.

Who came from the spread and is okay? Flacco came from the spread.

Joe Montana came from the triple option at Notre Dame. Didn't seem to hurt him.

Not this year anyway. Having thought it over, I just can't get behind it.

I've previously been willing to accept the notion of a guy in the later rounds (no one interests me in the first or second, for sure) but for now, even that is off the table for me.

Why?

Youth.

We've already got two young quarterbacks in the mix from last year's draft. What's the real point of throwing yet another youngster in if he's not a franchise caliber guy (and with Luck staying in school, none of those are available) :nonod:

I'd much rather pick up a vet like Billy Volek, re-sign Matt Moore and give him a shot in camp, and go from there.

If it doesn't work out, maybe you can engineer a shot at another franchise quality QB in the draft or free agency. But for this year, there was only one franchise QB in the draft, and he's not coming. The free agent class may not be great, but at least it offers a little balance in the age department.

Sorry fans of Newton, Gabbert, Locker, Mallett, Taylor and anyone else. I just can't get behind it.

We are not getting a franchise quarterback this year.

There are none available in the draft, in free agency, or via realistic trade. None :nonod:

Next year? Maybe. This year? No. The best thing we can do this year is find a reasonable stopgap. For me, that's Volek via free agency. I have no interest in reaching in the draft, taking a shot at a guy we hope might be a franchise guy (already did that last year) or giving up the kind of significant value it'd take to trade for a guy that could fit that role.

This is one problem for which there just isn't any solution available this season, so we are just going to have to be patient.

(yes, I know ahat I'm asking) :sosp:

2 thread about the same topic in 2 hours in case we missed the first one.

Gotcha, we're not getting a Franchise QB this year.

(That was obvious the instant Luck decided to stay in school) :nonod:

So what about drafting newton, when we stink next year and get a low pick, then go for Luck and move newton to TE.

He got up slow after taking hits from Oregon defenders. That's not something that suggests sending him across the middle against guys like Troy Polamolu and ed Reed is a good idea.

Apparently not to everyone :(

the idea of limiting our options with "nobody ANYWHERE" is quite silly. We have no idea who could fall where, or how combines will go.

It is VERY unlikely the Panthers take a quarterback but it is a possibility. The top four prospects are all arguably better prospects than Pike. But they won't fall to where we can pick 'em, or they shouldn't... if they do, it may be due to something that comes out about them that makes them no longer a better prospect than Pike, but falling to us does not in and of itself make that the case.

I don't follow Newton, but I did watch him in the championship game. In that game, I don't remember him having to make any tough throws. His WRs were wide open on every play that I remember. My question about Newton would be can he hit covered WRs consistently. If he can do that then I might be behind drafting him.

At a position where you generally only take four to camp, we already have two young prospects.

Anybody we draft in this one isn't a franchise guy. Just "young prospect" number three.

Why would we want that?

And all were pass first QBs with only moderate at best athletic ability. Bradford may have played in the spread, but most of the reads he had to make were on defences focused at stopping the pass.

I was asking for a 'project' QB, someone that would need to be taught the basics all over again as their whole offensive system was based on their ability as a runner.
