Pat Yasinskas on Cam Newton: Go get him.

Alright, time to throw my two cents into the debate.

Right now, I wouldn't draft a QB #1 overall. Here's my thinking - our QB situation last year was so abysmal, I don't think a rookie QB going into next season as "the guy" would do us much good. We have youth at WR, and strength at the RB spots. We need a veteran QB who understands the speed of the game, can stay calm under pressure, stands tall in the pocket and can make freaking progressions, and can be ready to start week one.

I don't know who this "someone" is, but we should probably trade down or go with Fairley. I think that an established FA QB, who has starter experience in the NFL would be the quickest solution to correcting the offensive woes. Jimmy's not ready to lead the offense, and another rookie QB next year wouldn't be the leader that this offense needs right now either.

Find a good veteran.

seriously, all his arguments for cam newton could be used for campaigning for armanti edwards as the #1 overall pick.

Strong arm

Does nothing but win

Extends plays

Won the heisman (or the D2 version of it)

all he has to do is work on his footwork/decision making/not taking off if his first read is covered.

no reason NOT to take him number 1

lol he is the best player in the draft cause i said so.

plays in a spread offense, lol so what?

I mean really? come on. the only difference between the two is that cam is taller than armanti.

Not even close.

Armani is how big?

How tall?

Can he see over the line and shake off tacklers?

What about his arm strength- can he throw a 40 yard pass and drop in in there with touch.

HOw many D-1 schools did he beat?

How many were ranked at the time?

How many times did he play in front of 100,000 folks and on TV?

Did he learn all his skills in 1 year or in 4.

Seriously the comparison is ridiculous. Anyone who thinks they are even in the same stratosphere needs their head examined.

What if you go into the draft and have no one in free agency to pick from and don't know who you can get since there is a lockout. Do you pick a guy to hedge your bets or pass and hope you can get a guy in free agency when they resume play??

Yeah, there's a ton of hate going on these days.

Why do people always say that people who criticize a player is "hating"? It's not hating, we just dont think he's WORTH the top pick.

Colt Mccoy was roughed up by Bama in the Title game and he beat Pittsburg with the Browns.....:hurray:

Different quarterbacks, one runs 14 times in all his games he plays, McCoy only runs when he has to, like a Jake Plummer.

One of the things that Cam Newton can bring immediately is his with his freakish size, mobility, and strength these 3rd and 2's and 3rd and 1's will be almost impossible to stop. For the last several years this is an area that we have struggled with. He may not come in and throw for 30 td's but he will be awesome in third and short and deep in the red zone. For those who say, "he won't be able to run through NFL linebackers" consider this he is bigger than ANY linebacker we have on out roster. Our heaviest line backer is Jason Williams who is 244 lbs. Cam is @ 255.

first off, Newton (with his great size) wont be running through players like he did in college and those 3rd and 2s will likely get a yard. as for running through linebackers, wont happen, on those 3rd and shorts, the d-line would then get Cam and the linebackers are faster which means they will catch him easier than they could in the pros, his running wont be as great as it was.

You really didn't just compare newton to Bradford?

That's what some do, but like i said, the difference is simple, Bradford passed the ball much more than Newton did, Bradford didnt have games where he ran the ball 28 times, Newton will HAVE to tone that running down to 6 times a game, if he runs more than 10 times, he wont make it through an NFL season.

Stop acting like a number one pick should be a sure thing, it never is. Luck was a once in a decade type of prospect. Most others are "projects" to a certain degree.

no number one overall pick is a sure thing, BUT when you draft, it's best to take what it's closest to a sure thing.

LOL, no it isn't. Why? Because we already have a bust QB in Claussen

What if Newton busts? Well guess what? We've got another stable of players to pick from next year.

And again, how are you making things worse? We've ALREADY got a bust QB.

ok, what if Newton busts, you said we've got a stable of players to pick next year. So basically, if we get the top pick in 2012 with Cam Newton as the starter and Clausen as the backup, then we draft an Andrew Luck or Matt Barkley, yeah, i would really love to be them, coming in after two guys were given up on after their rookie years. As for how we make things worse, WELL, Clausen MAY be a bust, BUT with Newton as the bust, we have to pay him TOP dollar and if we quit on him after his rookie year, then we basically wasted money and a year on another bust.

Now, i know everyone wants Clausen gone, but going for Newton sounds too needy than drafting how you should draft which is best player on board combined with need.

Can he see over the line and shake off tacklers? he certainly can shake tacklers better than newton. newton just trucks people.

What about his arm strength- can he throw a 40 yard pass and drop in in there with touch. actually his arm is stronger than clausen's

HOw many D-1 schools did he beat? Michigan, at least

How many were ranked at the time? Michigan

How many times did he play in front of 100,000 folks and on TV?

Quite a few times actually

Did he learn all his skills in 1 year or in 4.

He didn't need to learn skillz cause he be an athlete like cam

you didn't read what i wrote at the end did you? i said it's the same thing minus the size. sure he played at a D2 school, but i say he's the best QB there is and that's all that matters

all i did was use the same logic to campaign for armanti as number 1 as the OP did. pretty stupid reasons to draft a kid #1 overall don't you think?

honestly, as f**ked up as this season could be.. I'd throw FA Vet(if any)/Moore/Clausen in there and see if the chips have us falling back at #1 before I took a lot of chances in value picks..

QB is the only issue, IMO.. so I wouldn't be mad if we put value in other positions this year and try to fix QB next year...

Here's the thing...

Going undefeated against the SEC, winning that division's title game, then going on to win the BCS sorta makes winning a single game against a D1 school a moronic comparison.

People down on Cam say "He has no foot skillz", "He has no accuracy", "He can't make reads"...

Yet, there is NO PROOF of any of that. I've asked for it in three threads across 20 some odd pages of haters replying this same broken record.

Someone please show me consistent evidence to back these claims up (like, a whole game where he is throwing off his front foot) and I'll stop making Cam threads.

agree, what i would do is get a good QB coach and a good coordinator, sign a Volek or Bulger and see if they can tutor Clausen and see if he plays like an NFL quarterback or still stinks it up and wait next year where they could have a Landry Jones, Matt Barkley or Andrew Luck.
