Pat Yasinskas on Cam Newton: Go get him.

I've yet to see anyone show that he is consistently inconsistent. He is able to make plays out of any broken play (even when injured in the BCS Championship game).

All I see is a ton of hate for the guy.

that's because when people say "his footwork in the pocket is bad and he only makes a single read the vast majority of time before running" you ignore it.

the offense he plays in is designed that way, which makes it difficult to judge him. add to the fact he has only played a year at that level and nobody is sure where he will end up... a lot of it i s going to depend on combine and workouts.

He is a project because he does not have experience with multiple reads, needs to work on his footwork, has to learn to throw from under center more frequently, has to learn not to rely on his legs if his first read is covered or he'll get killed...

If OREGON roughed him up, how exactly do you expect his style to lend itself to a long NFL career?? You don't. He needs to adjust, and he will, but that will probably take TIME.

edit: I had heard his 40 time was closer to 4.7, so we'll see how he does at the combine.

Cam runs a 4.5 forty right now. Faster than L.T....You guys are haters

doesn't matter how fast he is. running quarterbacks are not successful in the NFL. the only reason Vick is having the success he is now is because he learned how to become an efficient passer(and a damn good one at that).

Vick runs when there are absolutely no options to pass it. Newton runs when his first read is covered.

Colt Mccoy was roughed up by Bama in the Title game and he beat Pittsburg with the Browns.....:hurray:

McCoy has moderate success this year and won some nice games, an unquestionable upgrade. He also doesn't rely on his legs nearly as much as Auburn's offense makes it look like Cam does.

McCoy is also a project, so.

Ignore what the scouts are saying and reach (heavily) for a guy at number one when you've already got two young unknowns on roster and other areas that need help?

Good lord, no! :nonod:

Yasinskas suggests this based on the notion that "hey maybe the scouts are wrong."

That's great if they are. What if they're not?

If they're right, then you just used a number one pick on at best, yet another project. At worst, a colossal bust. And now that pick that could have been used to shore up another area of weakness not only fails to do that but also makes what was already a weak area even weaker :frown2:

This one is an absolute no. Ditto the notion of using it on Gabbert, Mallett or Locker.

Not hate, just intelligence. YOU DO NOT TAKE A PROJECT #1 OVERALL! He needs to be proven. We still don't know who that will be, but Green and Fairley are superior prospects to be NFL players immediately...key word immediately.

No one, not Fairley, not Green, not even Andrew Luck, is "proven". This is a complete strawman argument.

This thread is based off of a complete misconception of Pat Yas' ENTIRE article.

Actually, its YOUR misconception.

The point of this article is that we don't need a DT as badly as we do a QB who can compete with Freeman, Brees and Ryan. Right now, we don't have that. We need to go get Newton if our FO thinks he can start.

Many think he can. So do I. I've yet to see any evidence he can't.

Like I said in another thread. If Sam Bradford can come out and start for the Rams, Newton can start for us.

One of the things that Cam Newton can bring immediately is his with his freakish size, mobility, and strength these 3rd and 2's and 3rd and 1's will be almost impossible to stop. For the last several years this is an area that we have struggled with. He may not come in and throw for 30 td's but he will be awesome in third and short and deep in the red zone. For those who say, "he won't be able to run through NFL linebackers" consider this he is bigger than ANY linebacker we have on out roster. Our heaviest line backer is Jason Williams who is 244 lbs. Cam is @ 255.

Get real people. Cam is not going #1 in the draft and Richardson said he wasn't trading down, so go ahead and get use to the fact that we are taking the best defensive player on the board.

Personally I would trade down, but old man marble mouth has spoken.

I have no idea or opinion on whether to draft Newton. What I do want and hope is the guys evaluating and making the decisions do a good job.

What I have asked friends and people is what was Freeman like in College? This article compares Newton coming out to that of the Bucs drafting and taking Freeman.

Anybody know what was being said of Freeman when he was in college and then being evaluated for the NFL?
