Pat Yasinskas on Cam Newton: Go get him.

You can't pass on such a talented player.

I know many of our upstanding citizens on this board still hold a grudge against this guy and his family for all the stuff in the media so their opinions will always be skewed.

For those of us who love the game and who are not trying to assemble a choir but a winning football team instead can only hope our FO is not stupid enough to overlook perhaps the best player in college.

The guy is clutch under pressure and from what his teammates say is a great leader. He has the size, the speed, a big arm and Big Ben like improvising in the pocket. Pass?

As far as football goes this guy is the real deal and to overlook him would be ignorant indeed.

Newton is not the best player in college. He may not even be the best quarterback.

It's pretty much universally agreed that he's a project. You don't take project QBs with the number one pick.

The Auburn coach said this guy is the best player he's ever seen. He also coached Fairley.

Newton is better than Mallett, Gabbertt, and maybe even Locker but...

Ryan Leaf's HC said what a great guy he was. Pure BS.

Any Head Coach wants their former players to go high in the draft, makes it easier to get recruits. Harbaugh will tell you Andrew Luck is the best QB he's ever seen.

One of them is wrong.

Rankings are simply AP journalists and sports analysts. You draft what you need. Right now, our defense is serviceable. Hell, as Beason pointed out in a blog post recently, we were as high as #4 on D this past year.

We need someone who can lead this team to victory. Cam can do that. He isn't a project. His mechanics aren't as screwed up as people say they are. His sheer athleticism elevates his teammates.

It's Newton time.

I think he is a better Armanti.

All insults and mud slinging aside, Cam Newton has not had to read defensive schemes while in the spread offense. Watching the bowl game, he didn't make any pro style throws. Nothing went into tight spaces. He threw lobs to wide open receivers being covered by linebackers.

He also threw two bad passes to two very open receivers (one of which was three yards away from him in the endzone).

He's not even statistically better at scoring than The Golden Calf of Bristol was his first year truly starting for the Gators. I didn't see anyone clamoring for him at #1 overall, but I do see the Broncos universally laughed for taking him at #25. Newton won't be scouted as the best quarterback, so why would we take him?

Beware using vague words like "project" to discount the potential of any particular player. Some projects pan out. Every project doesn't take 2-3 seasons to bear fruit. Some projects are successful instantly and blossom into players of great impact (see: Polamalu, Troy). QB's are a bit of a different breed but again, not always. (see: Roethlisberger, Ben)

Cam Newton will not be a "bust." This young man is going to leave an imprint on the NFL. I'm not yet convinced the guy is headed for Canton or even Honolulu more than a time or two, but he's not going to Jawalrus his career. I seriously think Vince Young's first 5 seasons, as tumultuous and as kinda maddening as they were, are Cam Newton's floor. He's going to do what Vince Young with boundless confidence and focus would have done to this point, at least.

KT is right.

The Auburn coach said this guy is the best player he's ever seen. He also coached Fairley.

of course the Auburn coach will say he's the best, but scouts who judge him say Gabbert is the best, i am not on the Newton bandwaggon and honestly, if he played a better title game i might be on your side, but his title game showed alot of cons and that worries me.

Why are people talking about one game.have any of you guys seen there team play all season.you cant base weather he will be good or bad on one game.I mean come on.It doesnt matter about the offense cam ran and all that stuff.Jimmy clausen ran a pro style offense.Look at him now.Colt Mccoy was in spread at texas who career seems to be better in the NFL.So thats why you cant base that stuff off of what they ran in college or off one game. you have to look at there talent and how it relates to the NFL.Cam will be a very good player in the NFl. im not saying we should take him at number 1 No.But if they want him, trade down i mean its plain and simple.

So dont knock they guy.I mean we already have a bad team and bad at the QB position how worse could it get.If the panthers really want to they would look at Cam hard you better believe it.

I'll ask the same thing here I asked in the other thread.

We already have two guys that are basically projects. Somebody explain to me why we'd want our QB coach to have to spend his training camp coaching what amounts to three rookies?

For that matter, why do we want that as our only options for a starter?

Go to camp with the guys we have and two vets (Volek/Orton/Kitna/whoever and Moore). Better option than asking our QB coach to coach up three different projects at once.

Jesus....Bunch of Cam hate with nothing but the same replayed nonsense to back it up.

http://www.carolinahuddle.com/forum/carolina-panthers/54652-comparing-vy-to-cam-newton.html

Pretty solid scouting reports there that support a lot of that "Cam-hating nonsense". Most people don't doubt that the kid can play or that he will likely be a first-round pick - he's just not worth the #1 pick this year.
