Cam newton declares for the NFL Draft

You know.... I have no idea whether or not Cam can or will be a legit NFL QB nor if the Panther's should pick him or not... that has been debated enough on here BUT what I do want is for him to light it up at the combine and for "they hype" machine to pump him up.... THEN and maybe if some team really does want him bad enough and the Panthers decided they didnt = it possibly could help us trade out of #1 ;)

Wouldn't that be nice

If you want the guy in this draft that would help our offense out most (especially year 1) its Newton. If he can even come close to the success on the ground he did in college he will help open up this running game. And his deep ball would be awesome in a down the field attacking O.

I have no real concerns about Talent level when it comes to Newton. What concerns me is his work ethic. I have no idea how much love he has for the game so I can not comment on that. I think it all boils down to how he does in interviews.

If you think he is going to be the guy first in last out every practice and will put in the time in the tape room then you take him and don't look back. If not pass on him and select your top D prospect. For me its Bowers or Quinn, Fairley to me he is just too much of a risk for not enough reward (I really don't get all the hype he seems to take advantage of mistakes alot which isn't necessarily a bad thing). Green is not going to be our pick (barring a Smith/WR trade) you can quote me on that.

...heh. I dunno what to tell you except that the way he plays in college isn't going to go over so well in the NFL. The rest of the premise of your post... man, I dunno where to begin.

Cam Newton is a project and I'm not sure how people can think otherwise.

I know hes a project there rarely is a QB coming out of college who doesn't end up being one (ala Rogers). I meant that D's would have to prepare for his athleticism. It makes the D have to protect the perimeter. People forget how the Falcons were unstoppable when they had VIck on the ground. It wasn't all him. CJ tore the league up with VY.

I actually don't see us going this way as I think he won't fit with either the Panthers FO or what will most likely be our O coaching philosophy. Just stating he would help our O more then Green (as he is the only other front runner for the pick at the time on O) basically.

I was under the impression he was not as fast as Vick, but I could be wrong.

I guess you missed the VY/CJ example. VY ran a 4.58 at the combine. I would wager he tops that easily. If VY had his head screwed on right he would be a pretty good NFL QB.

We'll see how CJ does without VY there. He fared OK this year it seems so I'm not sure how much of CJ was VY and how much was CJ/good O-line.

In general having a good quarterback can help out a running back tremendously. I don't think Cam Newton does anything in that regard that a good quarterback wouldn't anyway. Also, my biggest issues are actually with Newton's passing abilities... I worry about his reads, his accuracy in traffic, and his footwork. There's threads about this though so I won't say more than that.

Mine as well which is why I mentioned the work ethic bit. If he is a guy that you know is going to work his butt off to improve as a passer then you take if not pass. I'm not saying he is my only choice just the one I would make with the info I have at this time.

That's fine. There's some further breakdowns of him if you want to look 'em up. You are right, he has physical tools such that if he puts in the effort, he will improve. However I think you can say that about all the QBs in this draft.

I agree with all of this.

IMO if we pick QB this year it will be a project. Hell if we stick with Clausen he is still a project. Still your right he will not bowl threw interior linemen like he did in collage and some of his throws will get picked. He is def not NFL ready by no means. Still I think with a good run game he could be very deadly even his first year. The only thing that puts me off and this really bothered me was that he had his father in the crowd at the BCS when AU told his dad to be no where around AU football. That right there told me he dose not respect his coach or U.

Well, i bet we will hear all the Cam Newton lovers about how he should be the number one overall pick, BUT honestly, i see him going to the Vikings, i see the panthers passing on the QB and if they take one it's Gabbert or Mallett, but i see them passing. i see the 49ers first getting a QB and they get Gabbert, then i see the Titans getting Mallett, then Washington getting Locker, than the Vikings getting Newton.

God i hope the Redskins don't bite

i hope not either, as a Panther and Redskin fan, i WANT Jake Locker in Washington, LOCKER is Shanahan's next Jay Cutler and i see Newton giving Shanahan headaches with all the problems he would have to fix, with Locker, he would just have to make better decisions.
