AJ Green or Nick Fairley

1. You have literally no basis for saying that unless you have precognitive abilities.

2. Not if we don't upgrade at QB and Offensive Coordinator.

we won't be able to upgrade our QB, that doesn't mean you don't bring in offensive guys.. do we ignore TE as well until we have a QB?

and to your 1st point, bring in Cofield, we'll do just fine on defense.. anything you disagree about that? you don't need precognitive abilities to know which positions you invest more in..

you can plug GOOD DTs, (I'd venture to say Cofield is better than Fairley) and get a top 10 defense..

you need a top 5 QB to handle no name WRs and make them look good.. since you've established we don't have that, and regardless, we can add another threat to a solid WR corp..

I hope that is a solid basis for you.. ;)

I'm starting to think that Peterson will be the pick. We need a #2 CB and Peterson is one of the only talents worth the pick. AJ Green knocks all of the WR's we drafted last year down the depth chart.

so yeah, let's avoid adding talent to the roster so the scrubs can play..

I agree with you, but that philosophy I bolded is.. ehh... subpar..

I want Green due to the fact that our offense is far and away the worst in the NFL. Having an offense that is so bad that even hardcore fans struggle to watch the game is pathetic. Another playmaker on offense should make a big difference, especially lined up with Smith, and Williams/Goodson/Stewart in the backfield.

I'm not opposed to Fairley, and most people think he'll be our choice. He'll certainly help our pass rush, but I doubt he'll have as much of an impact as Green. The QBs of the NFC South are exceptional at avoiding pressure, and getting the ball down field. Bringing down Josh Freeman for example, is no easy task, and he makes pass rushers look silly more often than not.

In today's NFL, I'd say offensive firepower trumps a good defense. The NFL favors teams that make big offensive plays, deep passes, yac, tds, exciting football. Smith/Green/Gettis excites me, and should open up our rushing attack, allowing us to become preditors rather than prey. Adding Failey would help to make our defense more solid, but our high flying, td scoring opponents will still air it out. Sure we can win a few games with our improved defense, but who will be watching when we're mathmatically eliminated from the playoffs?

Here are the reasons people are giving for why we should draft Green over Peterson or Fairley.

1. We need playmakers on offense (Yes, we do. But you've got the position wrong. We need a playmaker at QB. WR is fine. Upgrading WR but not QB will keep our offense in the basement.)

2. We need a WR to draw double teams (Anyone who attended the games last year could tell you that Smitty was still drawing double coverage, despite his lack of production. Besides, Gettis showed more potential than almost any other rookie WR. Why can't he be that guy?)

3. We need excitement on the offense (Stop being 14 years old.)

4. The offense sucked so we need to draft a WR (Please look at a few posts back from me and see that I gave a large response that defeats this objection. The quick and dirty is that our offense being bad had nothing to do with our WR's. It was the QB and the OC. Upgrading WR may help, but it does not fix the offense. You have to address QB and OC if you want to fix the offense...otherwise your precious AJ Green will rot.)

5. We can address DT in FA so we should draft a WR (Why sign a FA when we can just draft a promising DT? Also, it is completely ignorant to say that we can address DT outside of the draft but we can't address WR outside of the draft.)

1) We need a QB, but that is irrelevant to still needing a threat after Smitty leaves.. In addition to Gettis & LaFell.

2) Smitty won't draw double teams in 2 years..

3) quit being 14 and making things up

4) Please learn that you need more than 2 receivers, and 1 old one.. QB is needed in addition to WR and TE..

5) We can get a younger WR with good character as opposed to older receivers with character concerns.. DT can be had in the form of Cofield if we target him.

so yes, you were saying? :)

1, 2 and 4) At least we still have Smith and two young, promising WR's. We have ZERO decent DT's. Three solid or better WR's vs. Zero solid or better DT's...and you think we should go WR. Why address a future need (Smitty getting slow or retiring or whatever) when we have a glaring immediate need at DT?

3) Someone said something along those lines. I didn't make it up.

5) No evidence to suggest that we will go after Cofield. We have always been very frugal and sparing in free agency. And character concerns are irrelevant when you're talking about Smitty. He's the best player in franchise history. He's the heart and soul of the team. He may get a damn statue after he's done playing. And most importantly, he and Jerry Richardson are very close. JR isn't going to throw him under the bus because AJ Green has "good character."

    • Yes.  And this converts directly to confidence.  Does the coach have confidence to call a deep dig or seam route?  Does Bryce have confidence in his ability to be the Alpha?  Do his teammates have confidence.  About film--when I see Cam Newton's pre-snap confidence vs. Bryce's, it is night and day.   Film--tells you if the WRs are open (why l love watching the Replay telecasts from the end zone cameras--you can see it.  I have seen 2 WRs open and Bryce's eyes are on the outlet WR or the pass rush. )  You can see progressions, and he has improved a bit--but he is very quick to rush through 1 and 2 and checkdown--that is a lack of confidence in his ability to read the defense.  I had a former NFL TE (Deems Maye) who played QB in high school (not sure about college) tell me that the best QBs read the defense by knowing where everyone will be when the ball is to arrive--not where they are.  I think his QB at the time was Humphries.  He said that Humphries would throw the ball into coverage before the cuts etc.  because he understood DB momentum, zone areas, etc.  and he could just see it.  Said so when people say nobody was open, they are usually right because nobody should be "open" when the QB has the ball--when the ball arrives, everyone should be open.  He said Humphries was never "great" but his skills were limited--from a small school--but his ability to read a defense made him never give up on a route.
