AJ Green or Nick Fairley

meh...we'd still be looking at the bottom if we draft fairley. we still need to score points. how is fairley going to accomplish that?

we scored less per game than the #1 defense allowed. fairley isn't going to get us lower than that.

we don't improve the offense, we won't win games. it is as simple as that.

We only spent 77 mil this year. a regular cap year is 128mil. we will have plenty of money to resign everybody we want and plenty of money to grab whatever FA we want. Plus we will have a new system on offense so it will go up and will drastically improve as the season goes on and guys get comfortable. Our D will be rock solid if we pick up a DT. It doesnt have to be Fairley. We can trade back and grab another DT. This year is one of the best in a while for wideouts. There are plenty of other receivers that will be around in the 3rd round. I am more optimistic than most about next year.

what kind of stat is that? not even sure what that means? are you saying "man if we didnt get gashed for 50 yards here or 40 yards there then we would have actually had a decent run defense" LOL

We were 23rd against the run...

well let me explain the stat to you.

we were 7th place in yards per carry against us. 23rd in total rushing yards.

that means that we protected against the run just fine (top 10 in the league), but teams rushed against us way more than most teams.

if a team runs on you 500 times, and you limit them to 2 yards every time, that's still 1000 yards. does that mean your run defense sucked? no, you limited them to 2 yards. but you still gave up a ton of yards purely because of how much they ran.

this was the case with the Panthers. we were 5th place in the entire league in the amount of rushes against us. we protected against it just fine, they just kept coming and coming so it looks like we gave up a ton of yards.

oh, well that at least makes me feel better about our D. You would think they take that into account and wouldnt have us ranked 23rd

all of what you said applies to DT in FA.. there are 3 really good 4 or 5 year Vets we have a very real chance to pick up and the money available that you mention can go towards that.. They won't take 2-3 years to be disruptive and make a name for themselves and they've already proven they aren't a bust..

there are plenty of DTs later in the draft as well.. So I would like to take a chance on a game changing receiver than a receiver in the later rounds.. and that game changing receiver over a game changing DT and take a chance in the later rounds for a DT on top of FA..

now what is going to happen? hardly any of us know.. the safe pick amongst the fanbase is Fairley.. yes, you can go with that pick and say you were right all along.. but you don't really win anything..

I'm pointing out what I'd rather we do (if we don't trade down).. the chance of it happeneing could be slim to none.. but we won't be in the playoffs next year and we are going to need a receiver for the future. DT can be had elsewhere, and later in the draft..

Except we are ranked 23rd, in rush yards allowed. The thing is you have to look at all the stats, and not just one random one. Just like the Patriots are bottom 5 in the league against the pass (in yards) but looking further shows that they had the 2nd most pass attemps against, and had the same amount of TDs as INTs against the pass. That is why they have 2 DBs going to the pro bowl, as it is clear they had a very solid pass defense.

do you have a link to these stats? From what I observed our run D F78cking sucked. I mean we were getting gashed on the reg. That is why our linebackers and secondary had so many tackles because our DTs were terrible. I personally thought Tank Tyler and Louis leonard were decent. Our pass rush was awesome in preseason with them. Then they were cut and the misery began. I guess maybe they played crappy in preseason? or did we really just go super cheap?

I really dont know the answer to this but maybe one of you does. When free agency starts can teams start signing guys or do they have to wait until the CBA is complete? I know you cant trade until the CBA but not sure about FA? My fear is that you will be able to sign FAs and JR has already said that he will not make any moves until the CBA. That will leave us with table scraps wether we go after a QB or DT or wideout or whatever. He will piss me off if he misses the bus.

can't sign anyone until CBA is finished.. so everyone has to wait..

We played well, or 'decently' against the run. No pressure AT ALL from the DTs in the passing game.

DTs Total Disruptions = 4 Sacks, 6 Hits, 20 Pressures in 909 snaps

That means our Dts made a play in 3% of pass rushes.

Charles Johnson was credited with 12 sacks, 11 hits and 58 pressures in 481 pass rushes (17%). One player totalled approximately three times the amount of pressure that our 6 DTs who played this season.

Just sort them by whatever stat you want to see. You will find we had 503 rushes against us (5th most) but allowed 3.9 YPC (7th best). You will have to go to ESPN to get YPA Passing, but we were 15th. http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/passing/sort/yardsPerPassAttempt/position/defense/seasontype/2
