The thing with the Steelers is that Big Ben has shown time and time again that even if you do stop his running game he can burn you with his arm and his receivers. While you could say their "weak link" is their passing game, that is more reflective of the strength of their rushing attack I think.

They did, and they kept winning games, but in only 1 game did their quarterback throw a touchdown (3 in one game, 3 ints total)

That was more of a joke as I think they are a very complete team.

The second part just goes to show that they can win games without a QB doing much. They went 3-1 in those 4 games. I'd say the were leaning on the run game and defense quite a bit.

More than a bit. Their defense and special teams won them at least 2 games.

edit: Which does go to your point about the strength of a complete team being more important than just a QB.

but a QB can bring you through rocky points and gives you a better ability to adapt to what an opponent throws at you.

Giants won with pressure on Brady, that's not the same as "stop the run" infact it's the opposite.

You think it might have to do with the fact that the Pats didn't have a run game?? It isn't the opposite at all. You stop the run and make them one dimensional so you can dial up the pressure and sack the quarterback. The pats just made it easier by only running the ball 15 times for 43 yards. And it made Brady easier to sack as the DEs could turn it loose. It didn't take pressure off Brady.

Last year New Orleans won the superbowl because of their rushing attack and defense as much as Brees passing.

That may be true for this season. What is your excuse for him for 5 losing seasons out of 8? Or, the 3 losing seasons out of the last 4?

Based on those stats you just gave me, QB and passing is their weakest link.

You may not need an Elite QB, but Steelers isn't a good example of that.. IMO, Ben is at the top of the league as a QB..

And they also have a pretty good receiving corp.. they have everything you need to win in this league.. regardless of their running game..

Reinforcing the need for defense and that the game is won in the trenches. Some people earlier tried to argue that Eli was the reason they won. Somone even said it was because the way Eli perfectly placed the ball into the guy's facemask just to make sure he wouldn't drop it. :rofl:

Defense is important, but the idea that you can win championships by focusing on stopping the run and "forcing" opponents to pass the ball is outdated.

The passing game and the rules that favor the passing game have evolved to the point that teams like the Patriots are totally comfortable depending on the passing game to move the ball... you shut the run game down and they dink-and-dunk you to death.

Given all the rules that favor receivers, the only effective way to combat the passing game is with pressure, which is exactly how the Giants beat the Patriots in the SB. You can't afford to just sit back and play a cover-2 shell anymore, you will get beat, it's only a matter of time... you have to attack the passer.

but they ahve the ability to turn it on from QB when they need to. if they for some reason fall behind (and it happens) they have a QB and a passing game that can bring them back. big ben is pretty far from a weak link in their offense. he's essential to it. that makes him worth the first round pick.

the ranking is based on yardage, but when you look at the yards per passing attempt they are 2nd behind the chargers with 8.1 and 2nd in yards per completion with 13.1. they are 5th in QB rating.

meanwhile they are 17th in rushing yards per attempt, behind even us.

rushing game is and has been their weak link.

if you want to be consistently competitive, you need to have an excellent QB. otherwise you are making too much work for your run game and defense and are far too limited as to what you can do.

Agreed, he's NEAR the top of the league. But it can't be argued that his team was still good without him. They went 4-1, beat the #1 seed in the NFC, and did it without a QB. That's how good their defense is.

The Jets beat arguably a top 5 all time QB with a run game and a defense.

People often overhype QBs of good teams into something they aren't (Cassel in KC, countless others). You can't overhype a defense.
