Perhaps I'm naive, but Gantt can go to hell

Journalistic integrity

While it's nice to want somebody who is a fan of the team, I go to the Huddle enough to satisfy that urge.

What he said.

If I want fandom, I come here. If I want an objective view, I like Gantt. If some people weren't so thin skinned, they'd realize he's actually kind of amusing. But this goes to the whole fan thing of "<insert announcers name here> is a HATER!! He doesn't like our team!!! He's BIASED!!!". Um, get a thicker skin. No writer, analyst, or announcer unless employed by the team should or will be a cheerleader for this organization.

Besides, imagine if the beat writer was a fan. We'd get overly positive takes after a win, and columns encouraging us to join them in jumping off a building after a loss. I don't want that personally.

I am not saying be a cheerleader for the organization. Gantt would be an ugly one. Sometimes it's just better to say nothing.

As a former sports journalist I can tell you that your job is not to be objective, but to present facts in a way that sells papers. Nobody should care who you root for, but you cover the local team. Sometimes it is stating things that might make the readers upset or mad, like the irresponsible and Malicious Florio on PFT--he loves to stir the pot ans sit back and watch emotion make him money. But to say that you don't care if they win or lose is stupid. Winning sells more papers. It boosts the economy. It creates more national attention for his articles.

Even if looking at it on a much smaller scale, anyone would rather interview players who are winning.

Final point: If objectivity were Gantt's platform, why do we all know where he and Armanti went to college? I once read an article that mentioned that Armanti went to Appalachain State 4 times--the article had about 7 paragraphs and had nothing to do with colleges. To use articles about the NFL to pimp some small school that maybe 1/100 of the readership cares about is juvenile.

I have met Darrin, and he is a nice person. I did not hear the radio comment, so I could be taking things out of context.

No, he doesn't need to be a fan, just like Harry Carey didn't need to root for the Cubs--but he did, and people loved him for it. It is not wrong either way.

This is a stupid and ridiculous post. Any sports journalist knows that you are not supposed to be a fan of the team you cover because it puts bias into your articles.

I like Gantt's stuff, and frankly I don't care if he likes the team or not as long as he covers it and gives me news about them everyday like he's supposed too.

Having all the inside knowledge, and things unfit to print for libel reasons, probably can sour your opinion on the team you're covering quite a bit when you discover that they're doing shady things behind closed doors. Not that it's exclusive to the Panthers, but all NFL teams have to operate under a certain aura of scum to make such cold financial decisions.

Every word of this is true. It is hard to believe that there is a Gantt-like Douchey-douche in every NFL town. This clown has achieved an elite level of worthlessness in spite of the gift-wrapped opportunities presented him.

The fact that he spends so much time telling people he's not a fan and doesn't care makes me think he is and he does...

I think he got butthurt from people riding his case about riding AE all over the place while failing to objectively acknowledge that all in all, from a value stand point, it wasn't a good idea trading up for him.

He gets info out there quickly though and does take time to respond to followers, so he's not all bad. Though every time I see that stupid "try the veal" line I instantly think of Andre from The League.

I think he might actually perfectly be a representation of Gantt.

Well, I didn't get that newsflash. Of course I didn't take sports journalism. I can see the not playing favorites to a player part, but to actually say that you don't care whether the team that you cover wins or loses is sports sacrilege .

He can keep that little tidbit to himself.

By the way, I have a degree from one of the top journalism schools in the country (many say top 3) and they never taught me that I wasn't supposed to care about a story. Journalists are not robots, they are people.

.........*facepalm*
