Perhaps I'm naive, but Gantt can go to hell

top dawg

I believe in being critical of the organization, or aspects thereof, when warranted. I really do, but don't cover my team if you don't give a poo about them.

And some talk about this guy with a certain reverence.

Are we soft? The Huddle should not be the ice bucket for the wine and the platter for the cheese. Gantt would be better served in Cleveland.

Well, I didn't get that newsflash. Of course I didn't take sport journalism. I can see the not playing favorites to a player part, but to actually say that you don't care whether the team that you cover wins or loses is sports sacrilege .

He can keep that little tidbit to himself.

Journalistic integrity

While it's nice to want somebody who is a fan of the team, I go to the Huddle enough to satisfy that urge.

Why is it perverse?

From dictionary.com:

per·verse

[per-vurs] Show IPA

–adjective

1.

willfully determined or disposed to go counter to what is expected or desired; contrary.

2.

characterized by or proceeding from such a determination or disposition: a perverse mood.

3.

wayward or cantankerous.

4.

persistent or obstinate in what is wrong.

5.

turned away from or rejecting what is right, good, or proper; wicked or corrupt.

There are different nuances of the definition, but in respect to #1, I think that it's not too much to expect for a journalist that covers a team to be concerned with whether the team wins or loses, especially in light of the fact that said journalist's main consumers are of the fan base.

Why should he? If you not part of the team nor a fan of it what's wrong with being apathetic towards it? The journalist job is to write/follow a story not to care what happens.

I believe most sport fans care about the quality of articles the author provides, not what there pesonal opinion is.

It's not as if he doesn't care about the sport, or the experience of reporting the team. He just doesnt care for the outcome.

Supporting a team and providing quality articles aren't mutually exclusive. I could make an argument that the quality of the articles would be better by someone who actually cares for a team than by someone who is apathetic towards the team (and, yes, you could argue the opposite). My main deal is that if Gantt wants so abide by some pie-in-the-sky sense of journalistic integrity, then he should keep his opinions on caring whether the team wins or loses to himself. There is really no reason for him to even "go there", because the only thing that he can really achieve is to alienate many of the consumers that he is supposedly informing.

It may not be politically correct, but I want writers that cover a team to actually want the team to succeed (at least for the most part). It's not like Gantt is some national writer who has to give a facade of neutrality. Yeah, he probably had his favorite team coming up, or maybe he has some family member or friend somewhere that plays for some team other than the Panthers, but it's still not too much to ask for him to support the team that he basically represents on some level (even if it's just by appearance to the fans).

Like I said, call me old-fashioned, out of touch or just plain stupid, but I don't want to read anything else that Gantt writes because, as a Panthers fan, I feel I would get better insight into all aspects of the organization by someone who actually cares whether the Panthers win or lose. Moreover, I think it's outrageous that someone who has more access than most to the organization can be so publicly apathetic towards the real success (which comes down to wins and losses) of the franchise.
