Word of caution about drafting Fairley

Word of caution? Which top picks bust more often: QBs, WRs or DTs? And drafting Fairley is risky? Newton, Green or Fairly and #90 is the risky one? *scracthes head*

Really they bust all about the same. If I had to pick the least it prob be cb or SS.

If we can't trade down (very likely we won't), I think we have to take Green. It adds excitement to the franchise, he's a playmaker, and it gives us more firepower on offense to work with. Yes our wide receivers are "fine", but why not scare some defenses a little? A wide receiver at #1 overall is not too high if you know it's a guy that will perform. Green will perform.

DTs are a bigger impact. First the call has to be pass before the WR has an option to be in on the play (save a gimic) and then he has to be the target of the pass.

If Fairly can be an every down tackle (chances are he will), his value is a lot high higher than a WR.

not sure if this was posted already, but the reason why no one knew of fairley before this year was not because he wasn't any good as an underclassman, but because he was a Jr. College transfer. He was regarded as one of the best overall players on the JC level before going to Auburn. fwiw, I know some of the knocks I've heard about bowers is that he really played well but wasn't as much as an impact in years previous. That knock can't be said for Fairley.

Noted. However, look what Dez Bryant accomplished last year. If not for character concerns he could have gone much higher, and he proved worth it on the field from day 1.

Okay, which one sets a franchise back more if they do bust?

I agree that CB is about the safest...along with interoir lineman on either side of the ball.

Back in the day it was QB. After Ryan Leaf and Akili Smith it would be WR. WRs are always held high entering the draft but the game changes so much for them they have a high bust rate. They also command big bucks that other players don't. You never see a RB get paid like a WR or QB dose. Even though RBs can take over games without a good QB and WRs can't. Example Roddy White and andre Johnson.

He still didn't help a struggling team overcome. Dez is a great talent, but with the holes elsewhere here for the Panthers, WR is not as as high on the priority list, IMO. For a team like Green Bay that a young talent could help an otherwise set offense, I'd agree with you taking a WR over a DT. For a struggling team, build from the trenches outward.

So taken your point, which would be the safer pick between Green and Fairley? I would surmize Fairley.

fwiw, here's mayock's thoughts about fairley...

"Before it's all said and done, I think you'll see Fairley grade out better than [Oklahoma defensive tackle] Gerald McCoy, [who went third overall last year to Tampa Bay],'' the NFC scout said. "It wouldn't shock me if he goes first overall. Bowers is good, but that kid from Auburn is special now. He's the type of guy that elevates the play of others around him, and those guys are pretty rare. He has his issues with taking cheap shots at times, but there are teams that like a little of that in their players. The Ravens look for guys like that, and they find them, too. He'd have to be a real turd to make me pass on him. We'd make a spot for him if he was somehow still there when we pick.''
