The Pro Clausen Thread....

I think part of the problem is the woeful play of all the QBs this year. That kind makes people have a double take when considering Clausen.

By rights, he should have played the worst as he was the least experienced in the NFL, so it's not surprising to see Moore and St. Pierre have a couple of moments. However every single passer we had ended up with a QB rating below 60, that surely indicates it wasn't all on the QB.

but if St. Pierre can walk out if his child's nusery, have 3 days of practice, make his first NFL start......and look like a pretty functional/decent QB for 3 and 1/2 quarters....that say something about how sad Clausen was.

Yeah, I believe this, cause it's been a couple weeks since I've seen him play. Oh wait, I remember now! He's goddamn terrible! Seriously, he made like 5 good throws all year. And by good throw, I mean downfield, into a relatively tight window, not a good 6 yard throw to a tight end on 3rd and 16.

And yet, low and behold he has a QB rating under 50, 2 interceptions, an eerily similar completion % and 51% of his yards coming from one pass.

Seems to me all the emphasis on the college stats is irrelevant now that we have NFL game tape on him. So it was a long way to go to say very little. As for Clausen's potential, if it is there, it is buried pretty well. Most of us here were shocked when we saw him play based on reports from college. That great throwing motion, great accuracy, strong arm, NFL ready accolades were not there at all. And things didn't really improve over the season despite a revived running game and receivers who improved over the season.

Clausen will be here 4 years at least and will get his shots to play. But even a clausen fan knows that we need to get some other folks in here at quarterback in the event Clausen doesn't pan out.

I agree. I hope some lightbulb goes off in the offseason/training camp. However just watching his games he played I saw nothing.

A few thoughts from a new guy (who likely will get lynched for them):

1. I loved Clausen coming out of the draft, and thought he was a steal in the 2nd.

2. It really was tough to watch him struggle this season, being hard to tell if it was him or just the team/coaching.

3. Only a homer would argue that Clausen's play was EITHER totally of his own making or totally to blame on the team/coaching. It's clear both were an issue, and he has to prove something quickly.

4. I still think its smart to bring in a vet to either compete with him or be another coach and help him develop. That player could also be an adequate fill in if Clausen does stink it up and needs to be relieved of his duties.

5. If he continues to not show signs of development, time to look for other options.

Among those I think are not an option: Cam Newton (though he would be a great TE/WR/ninja weapon), Vince Young (serious mental health issues), Carson Palmer (likely cut after next season cuz his arm is falling off), Ryan Mallett (I've actually heard from 2 scouts of other teams that major issues are coming to light and Mallett is off many teams board until round 4, and he is a complete D-bag).

Interested to get to know things around here!

Agree with those points. Welcome. Hang on to your sanity, it will be tested here.

Passer rating is meant to be used ONLY for a whole season, not for single games or 3-5 games. It weakens your argument when you use it in this context. Clausen is maybe the only person to use it for because he started almost a season's worth of games, even then it's not enough. On top of that, it doesn't mean anything really and no one associated with the NFL thinks of the passer rating stat as useful.

Look St. Pierre completed one pass over 20 yards and two passes between 10-20 yards. The ONLY big play was a semi blown coverage as the safety didn't give over the top help to the cornerback. Gettis was given a streak one on one and St. Pierre made the throw, which wasn't needed to be threaded at all as he was open.

Now I am not going to talk up Clausen at all, merely focus on the fact that St. Pierre wasn't good either. He made one decent throw in the game. 77% of his completions were under 10 yards and his distance distribution was almost identical to Clausen's.

You can say that about the QB rating, fine, but what about every other stat which mirrors what Moore and Clausen put up?

I'm not saying anything other than passer rating is a joke.

Also, the guy that was sitting on the couch and played just as well as the guy who had been here all year is sad. Moore was the only one who put together a good game out of the bunch, showing that it could happen.

Clausen also had the best rushing attack out of all 3.

But overall just a sh*tty QB year.

That is the only point I was trying to make. All played pretty poorly, which is why a lot of people are thinking there were issues beyond their natural ability.

Call them homers or whatever, but the point is it's a bit ironic to have all three put up very similar distribution patterns, similar turnover ratios, similar completion percentages and similar pressure/sacks ratios.

We should heavily feature Clausen next preseason. I think he could be pretty good with a year on the sidelines learning from Shula/Chud. If he comes out and has a big preseason, we could get a decent pick for him. Though I seriously doubt we'll ever recoup that 2nd rounder, we could get a 4th, possibly even a 3rd from the right team if they're desperate enough.
