The Pro Clausen Thread....

In another year when he still stinks can we bump this thread and have you apologize?

Exactly! If Clausen wasn't a 2nd rd draft choice he would have already been sent packing.

Having said that,my guess is this will be a make or break year for him in his development stage, even if it is in a backup role.

If you look at every quarterback that has started for the Panthers during the John Fox era, you will notice each one gets progressively worse. This is a product of a bad system/coaching but now with a new staff focused on teaching players the game, hopefully we can see some marked improvement in our QBs performances.

The fact that Jimmy was fumbling snaps and missing handoffs shows how little the coaching staff must have put into teaching our QBs the fundamentals and other important things that an NFL QB has got to know. With that said, I think the things Moore was able to do while being at a disadvantage from the start was more impressive than anything Clausen showed the entire season. Before we can really judge either player we have to see how they play under a halfway competent play caller and someone who knows how to put players in the best situation to succeed.

It's sad when you have to point to specific plays instead of whole games right? He didn't have 1 200 yd game. If we don't have access to any Free Agents I fully expect them to resign Moore and have them battle it out. All reports indicate that Clausen is nowhere near the talent Moore is.

Being honest, there isn't one guy around the league that if brought in, wouldn't beat out Clausen for the starting job.

Well he wouldn't or will not beat him legitimately without a wink and a nod from Mr. Hurney. I just find it odd that Rivera mentioned Jimmy specifically when asked about the offense and its struggles. Reading between the lines it seems that whomever were to take the HC job had to at the very least be open to DEVELOPING Clausen. Whether Clausen is worth developing or will amount to anything more than a backup was irrelevant.

The pick for Clausen was purely Marty Hurney's choice and the only pass I give him on that is if the Big Cat forced the issue.

I'm glad Zod has spoke the truth. I have been saying all year that Clausen hasn't been given enough time to be determined a bust. I like to back this up by showing people how Eli Manning started out, he was horrible and until he won the Super Bowl everyone thought he was a bust. Our offensive line was injured this year and Clausen was thrown into the starting job with no past NFL experience, banged up O-line, injured star running backs, A star WR that was dropping easy catches and constantly in his face, rookie wide recievers that still was learning the game and a horrible offensive scheme. On top of that we had John Fox who I think didn't care about helping developing the rookies because he knew he was gone after the season.

So how does anyone expect Jimmy to be successful with all the factors given?

I'm pretty sure most people that think Jimmy was terrible weren't expecting him to succeed, or even win much. We expected to see something, anything that gave us hope. Evidence that he was making progress in some way. Flashes that he could be a franchise type guy. When did he show anything? Regardless of what's around you talent and potential still shows through. Where did he show potential? The biggest problem is he was supposed to be the closest thing to a finished product. It's not like he is a raw project that just needs polish or experience in a pro style or under center. He is supposed to be close to his ceiling, which isn't encouraging.

I think people don't understand he was put into a horrible situation and was a rookie during that situation.

There are a few things to look for in a quality QB:

Arm strength-JC doesn't have any.

Mobility-I will give him this one, although he was running away from perfect pockets to throw from all season long.

Accuracy-Didn't show it.

Pocket presence-Didn't show it.

Field presence-Didn't have it.

Moxy (balls)-None, he didn't take any chances at all to make a play.

These attributes would be present regardless of the line he played behind or the recievers he throws to. It is evident that he doesn't have much of these things going for him. He will be 3rd string next season. No doubt in my mind. All of you who think he needs another season are sadly mistaken. No discussion about Matt Moore, who played better under the same circumstances? And who is a much better QB than JC will ever be. Also, something to think about. Matt and Norv Turner are close friends. Hmmmmm!

I think this article sums up my thoughts pretty well...veteran will be brought in to compete, and Clausen will be starting or he will be the backup (not 3rd string)

Seems to me all the emphasis on the college stats is irrelevant now that we have NFL game tape on him. So it was a long way to go to say very little. As for Clausen's potential, if it is there, it is buried pretty well. Most of us here were shocked when we saw him play based on reports from college. That great throwing motion, great accuracy, strong arm, NFL ready accolades were not there at all. And things didn't really improve over the season despite a revived running game and receivers who improved over the season.

Clausen will be here 4 years at least and will get his shots to play. But even a clausen fan knows that we need to get some other folks in here at quarterback in the event Clausen doesn't pan out.

That's exactly why Carr and Smith are in there. And it's also why I was pretty blunt about the "if he sucks, that's it" point.

Reading about last year's scouting reports is a good way to temper the enthusiasm for the next big thing. When I was researching, I actually laughed at a few of the comments. :)

A few thoughts from a new guy (who likely will get lynched for them):

1. I loved Clausen coming out of the draft, and thought he was a steal in the 2nd.

2. It really was tough to watch him struggle this season, being hard to tell if it was him or just the team/coaching.

3. Only a homer would argue that Clausen's play was EITHER totally of his own making or totally to blame on the team/coaching. It's clear both were an issue, and he has to prove something quickly.

4. I still think its smart to bring in a vet to either compete with him or be another coach and help him develop. That player could also be an adequate fill in if Clausen does stink it up and needs to be relieved of his duties.

5. If he continues to not show signs of development, time to look for other options.

Among those I think are not an option: Cam Newton (though he would be a great TE/WR/ninja weapon), Vince Young (serious mental health issues), Carson Palmer (likely cut after next season cuz his arm is falling off), Ryan Mallett (I've actually heard from 2 scouts of other teams that major issues are coming to light and Mallett is off many teams board until round 4, and he is a complete D-bag).

Interested to get to know things around here!
