Ron Rivera - what to expect - from a Bears fan

I have no fuggen idea, but I'm extremely happy and excited for both Chico and the Panthers. I think he'll instantly infuse energy and excitement into the team (as most new HCs do). I think his interaction with the media might be a stark contrast to Foxy's, though not necessarily giving anymore information than said. I am certain that he'll throw himself at the job with vigor and enthusiasm which in itself might be just the air freshener the Panthers Front Office and Locker Room both need.

my problem with fox with the PCs was mostly that he had no poise or the right composure at PCs. Every time we lost it wasn't "yea that was a problem and we need to fix it" it was always "yea, it was a problem, so what? deal with it..."

Congrats, Carolina fans. Rivera can run a bunch of different defensive schemes (Lovie's Tampa-2, the 3-4 they run in San Diego, Jim Johnson's 4-3 with all the zone blitzes) and the Bears' players certainly seemed to respond to him as a motivator. It was obvious that Chicago's defense played WAY harder in 2005-2006 than they did for the couple of years after Rivera left. Considering Rivera's track record, the Panthers' defense should be scary in the near future.

Unless he turns out to be one of these guys who inexplicably just can't make the jump from coordinator to head coach, he's a GREAT hire.

Yeah, Rivera offers a lot of flexibility - he's not the kind of guy who can only coach one scheme and has to blow up the old defense to install it. The Bears under Rivera ran a Tampa-2 base defense, but with a lot of Cover 1 and man-coverage blitzes mixed in. If the Panthers can find a three-technique, their personnel seems like a pretty good fit for the kind of defense Rivera ran with the Bears, if that's what he wants to run. I don't really know whether he'd use as many Tampa-2 looks given his choice of defenses, though...it seems like that was Lovie's baby and Rivera just went along with it.

Also, god help the Panthers if they hire Ron Turner. The Ron Turner playbook goes run run pass punt rinse repeat.
