If Fairley=Sapp & Green=Andre J who then??

Championship teams are built around a quarterback and in the trenches, NOT around wideouts. TO, Moss, C Johnson A Johnson, none have won the big game.

I can see your point but you have to think a tenacious d gives your offense chance after chance ie Mark S last year. Going from 12 to 3 or 4 with failey and a FA could be just what we need. Otah's return boost our running game back to atleast top six. I don't know because a Johnson type with what we have could be deadly in so many different ways just trying to get some different view points.

Yea I'm not saying they are or will be just wondering for the current state of our team in a very optimistic view what pick would help us out the most if both could reach elite levels.

A wide receiver is relevant when the ball is thrown his way. A defensive tackle is relevant on every single play.

If thats how both were to pan out, you definitely take Fairley. Games are won and lost in the trenches. Sure, Green might be the more flashy exciting pick, but you should go with the DT.

those trenches could be taken care of in FA... I'm almost willing to say there isn't 1 WR we can pick up in FA...

so what are we talking about again? ;)

FA isnt terrible, but you pay inflated prices, and generally the players arent super young. AJ may turn out to be great, but so could fairley. Id rather have a great DT then a great WR. Besides, I wouldnt be opposed to going into next year with Smith, Gettis, Lafell, and AE if he has improved.

I was opposed to "reaching" for a need, specifically Fairley a few days ago. But after reading about him and watching him last night, Im not convinced it is a reach. Fairley would fill a HUGE need, Green is more of a luxury pick. We are not desperate for WRs.

We have the opportunity to grab a 4-6 year DT vet who already has proven he isn't a bust and take a chance to set up our WR corp with 3 young WRs for the next 5 years.. Smitty is a luxury at this point and will do great in the slot..

I don't see the downside.. and expect Fairely to take 2-3 years to really show up on the field, depending on his work ethic..

Green could take the same time, but his scouting reports say he should have an instant impact..

hindsight is 20/20, so who knows.. I know nothing more than any of you do.. but based on this information, I don't see how Green is a luxury (more of a necessity), when our offense having more threats will help our QB (go get Orton, FO) and keeps our defense off the field.. at the same time, helping the WRs themselves by taking less coverage away from each one..

I'm not sold Gettis and LaFell are going to be such a threat that Smitty isn't double covered every play.. and, regardless, Smitty isn't the same '05 guy where he could blow past double coverage, so adding a player who has that kind of potential ability is most definitely a necessity.

A strong DT will be much more involved than an equally strong WR. A WR touches the ball 10 times per game if you're lucky. Fairley will effect 30 plays per game on average. For the #1 overall pick, I'll take the DT.

A WR threat has an impact on every single offensive play whether he touches the ball or not..

If I was building a team and had to choose between Sapp and Andre Johnson, I would choose Sapp. You can score all the points you want, but if you can't stop the other guy from scoring then you're going to struggle, Texans have proven this.

you do realize we had a 12th ranked defense who was on the field more than any other defense... with a last place offense.. how is any of that relevant to our situation?

we can't score ANY points and our defense is already fairly good with the addition of one of the best defensive minds in the country..

go pick up a proven FA DT and problem solved..

Okay good question! Here we go then!

Warren Sapp - Led team to a superbowl win

Andre Johnson - Have yet to lead his team to the playoffs

I'll say it's a easy choice!

team sport.. I don't see how this is a valid point at all..

-------------

I'm not going to be mad at all if we pick up Fairely, but no one is raising any valid points on why DT is so much more important than picking up a potential game changing WR.. lol

I agree with that, but Green isn't close to Andre IMO, I say Fairley all day.

Alot of people, especially Miami fans say Hankerson is better than Johnson ever was at the U.

Green is ranked above Hankerson on EVERY draft board.

Conclusion, Green very well could be even better than A. Johnson.

Fairley. They can't stop'em.

Green. They can't stop'em.

In this thread I would go with Fairly. I would love to see a defense like we had back in the day...blowing up QB's and crushing RB's. But I think everyone is missing the fact that the o-line needs some help. Otah hurt our offense last year by not being there. It hurt our running game and pass protection. No need for a WR you can't get the ball to.

There has been some valid points, but you have chosen to ignore them. Great teams are built inside out! Your correct this is a team sport but there are certain positions that can individually effect the outcome of a game, and DT is one of those positions. WR not so much, because they are dependent upon the QB to get them the ball.

no need to have an offense without a competent coaching staff..
