If We Don't Go QB in the 1st Round, Who is Your QB?

No to Jimmy Clausen. Sure, he would most likely have us picking 1st overall again next year, but who would Luck throw to? Everyone will be demanding a trade because of Clausen, and no one would want to come to Carolina as a free agent. (Because no matter how good Luck is, he would still be a rookie and would have to go through a rookie learning curve. Now I believe Luck is capable of starting week 1 and being one of the better QBs in the league right away, but that is a hopeful gesture of most fans.)

The best plan is to pick up a veteran guy, and with our defense, win a championship next year. (2000 Ravens team) This would require both Asomugha and Fairley, which I'm confident we could pick up barring the new CBA is done sometime around February. So ultimately if we are in the playoffs, and even better yet win a championship, Steve Smith and the rest of our quality players won't be demanding trades left and right. My two best candidates for this venture are Hasslebeck and Bulger.

Now if we did make the playoffs and win a championship, of course we won't be in a position to draft Luck. So as I stated before, during this year's draft or sometime early next season, we need to swap picks with a weak team. It's a gamble, but it's the only way to get Luck without tanking games. My candidates for this would be Cardinals, Chiefs (I think they will be bad next year), Browns, Dolphins, etc.

If we don't draft a QB in the first round then there isn't anyone we think is better than what we have here already. So I doubt we can pick a specific guy with any accuracy since we would likely be waiting for someone to drop like Clausen and Pike did last year and picking BPA. Seems there would be a group of guys that we would take if they drop into the third or 4th.

That would be a wasted pick in my mind. With Clausen here and a veteran likely, that gives us 1 spot for Pike, Moore and our draft pick. Which means the draft pick would either have to be bad enough to clear waivers or good enough to deserve a roster spot. I doubt we find that person unless it is a first rounder who will get the time to develop based on his draft position.

After drafting Clausen and Pike last year, I think it will have to be "the" guy not just "another" guy.

No QB we're fine there with new QB coach coming in and new plays and if the oc has any since he will play to the strenght of the QB until the coach and the QB fill like expanding the schemes in the playbook. But we need a player u can come in and be an impact palyer from the start I think the panthers going with Fairely as the number one pick. Don't know how many picks the panthers has in the draft but with what picks we have left I see us picking some depth and fill our needs through FA lik at Qb so I don't see matt moore coming back but I do see like VINCE YOUNG here or maybe KEVIN KOLB if the eagles don't sign vick heck I can see vick here in 2011 actually at a very reasonable price say 4 or 5 yrs at maybe 40 to 50 million with around 20 or 25 million quantreed. the toatal will include incentive for him
agreed vick would be a nice pick up.that would be a change.:iagree:

Alex Smith. He should be done with San Fran. Let him come to the East Coast. He has a live arm and has a nice combination of game experience and youth. He would give us a legit NFL starter till Clausen is truly ready for primetime.

When Alex Smith is given good pass protection and solid defense he has played very well. Believe it or not but Dante Rosario could become a poor mans version of Vernon Davis with Smith slinging the ball.

stop with the bolly volek. please.

what a crappy choice for QB. always has been and it only gets worse every year.

there is a reason that he has never had a starting gig anywhere. he's not good enough.

There is a bit of value in a player who is always brought back to be on the roster, despite young players being drafted. Whilst he might not have the skills on the field, it would suggest he has the right skills off the field, or is at least a very good second pair of eyes.

Like most have said, you bring in a Volek or Bulger IF you are sold on clausen, because you want the best safety net you can get. If you are not sold on Clausen you take a chance on someone like Smith etc as they might have just needed knew scenery to blossom.

The point is, you pick up the Qb who suits what you need. If you want to give Clausen the start, then you need a QB who can teach him and fill in in a pinch.

I don't get the opposition to Volek. He obviously isn't a long-term answer but we're not looking for one from a FA. He's in the black on TD/INT ratio, has a career completion percentage in the neighborhood of 60%, and any time he's been given significant time he's been solid. He'd be pretty good for the stop gap/mentor role while we get our poo together on offense.

I want us to bring in a proven vet that has been a winner in the NFL, some of these candidates are Matt Hasselbeck, Marc Bulger, or Donovan McNabb.

Next I want us to bring in another quarterback, this one being a young(er) one that has shown talent but might just need a new start to really blossom (a la Delhomme). Some of these candidates would be Troy Smith, Vince Young, Senaca Wallace and Alex Smith.

I would then let the two new quarterbacks battle it out in training camp along with Clausen, Pike and Null to determine who will be the starter and the two backups.

Preferably my depth chart in week one would look like this:

1) Matt Hasselbeck 2) Troy Smith 3) Jimmy Clausen.
