Scouts inc's take on Cam Newton, and Fairley too

Cam's character issues are way overblown. NFL teams will figure that out pretty quickly.

Yeah, I am not sure where all of these character issue accusations are coming from...

He bought a stolen computer ok

A.J. Green sold his jeresy online for cash

HIS DAD tried to get money for him playing at Miss St. That would never have even come up if Newton would have not played so well at AUBURN this year.

I am a Carolina/Auburn fan and there are more people saying that Cam Newton has more character issues than Marvin Austin and company and that is dead wrong.

But haters are gonna hate. Luckily for Cam- H8TRS = MOTIV8RS

I will be interested to see what happens between now and the draft. Newton's stock could move up or down. Might depend on the combine and tryouts. Seems he can focus on the mechanics if he wants. If he makes as much progress this year as The Golden Calf of Bristol did last year. He could move up quite a bit. Of course some already have him as a top 15 pick already and others are lower.

This is far from being set as this point.

As for Fairley, he really is a big strong dude. Is he the next Suh or not? He is a 1 year wonder but it was a heck of a one year. I don't think we could wrong with him but I wonder if there is someone like him in the 3rd or 4th or is this our one shot to get a franchise tackle.

Still the idea of counting on Clausen or Pike next year is unappealing at best.

To be honest, when watching him last night, he reminded me a lot of Big Ben skill set wise, and I could see him becoming just that good as a pro.

What bothered me though is it does seem he has a problem reading defenses and it felt like he was really just compensating for that with his big arm most of the time and forcing it where he wanted downfield (the INT near the sideline that was ruled incomplete as well as the first INT). I've watched him before but didn't do it for the purpose of analyzing him.

It appears to me that Auburn's playcalling is designed to protect him because he doesn't make the best decisions or recognize defenses quickly (the incomplete 4th down pass to the back in the endzone b/c it was last second decision and bad pass). This is what really bothers me about him right now. As Herbstreit said, like in boxing, Auburn jabs you to death with the run and then uses Newton to deliver the knockout blow.

This is a huge negative, but simultaneously, if we took him, I think it would be a lot less of a project than people think. Our offense has been run similarly for years, and although JR says it's going to change so we pass more, I could still see Newton being an excellent rookie as a starter for us. BTW, I was pretty anti-Newton before really watching him play last night.

Fairley is SO impressive though, so I'm not sure it matters. Then again, QB is our biggest need now, so if we traded to down to the mid-teens to pick up extra picks to take Newton, I wouldn't be mad... IF he is mature and wants to be the best and works to get better, he's gonna be a good NFL QB.

That actually the team that I suggest that he goes to. Ben Roth is getting into the middle of his career and the offense style Pittsburgh plays would be perfect for Newton to go in and have time to learn. The draft position that the Steelers are in would be about right to select Newton when they draft, without it being a reach.

Hell, you would think that Marvin Austin is a serial killer after listening to all the ABCers and the local media. The guy just wanted a small piece of the billion dollar NCAA pie, that's all. It has nothing to do with what kind of NFL player he will be.

Auburn played fox ball with a lead so we didnt really get to see if he could go hard in a back to back battle, even though certain games he lead his team to victories

One thing about him is that his size is a huge positive. Tall big and mobile. In the 1st half he didnt even look to run but to pass. In the 2nd half it changed

Fairley I'm half on honestly. Idk if we should draft him with the 1st pick. He's not Pep

it's funny, I've rarely seen experts in agreement about someone. Last year Clausen was taking heat from people like Todd McShay who thought he was just lacking in the mechanics and intangibles market and he wasn't sold on his skill set. Then you had people saying he should go #1 overall, or #4 like Kiper.

This year though, most of them are staying the hell away from Newton, though they often caveat that with "Some NFL team will reach."

Someone will. It'll be up to Cam Newton to show if he can play in the NFL. He may have the body, but does he have the mind, the dedication, and the toughness? Time will tell.

That is not true, at least for Scouts Inc and MANY other analysts. one of the largest knocks on Bradford was durability. the other was not pro offense. there was never a question about his character. never a question about his intangibles. never a question about his accuracy. he had shown the ability to read defenses. I don't recall if anyone had major issues with his footwork.

He had question marks, sure, but they were quite different.

What I have read says a team will stretch for him in the top half of the first round so the debate here is whether he will go 20th, 10th, or 5th. Hardly an indictment of his ability and an acknowledgement that for a team willing to develop him, he could be an exceptional talent.

No one is staying away. That kind of inflammatory rhetoric is the problem with negative exaggerations of fixable issues or ancient history. He is a definite first rounder on most boards. The discussion is only how high in the first round.

A lot of analysts are staying away from him because they aren't sure just how fixable those issues are, and ancient history of a couple years ago doesn't seem so ancient to a club paying him millions of dollars.

Someone will reach for him. You are likely right that he will go in the first. I would be astonished if he went as high as #5 all things considered but it is possible.

Some have said Tennessee would go after him because they have the "Support staff" for him, whatever that means. I guess if he really is Vince Young 2.0 as some smartasses around here have said, that would be a good fit, and they are #9.

However, as far as talent and place in the draft goes, I see him as a late first rounder/early second. Someone will reach for him as you say, so we'll see how high.
