Draft choices narrowed to 5?

Im pretty sure at this point in the game, if we're already only looking at 4-5 guys and Cam Newton being one of them, it will be an Epic Fail. We better be watching/talking/reading/speaking about everyone worthy of a pick in the top 10, find which one is the best for us and go from there.

Of course, all players will be considered until the combine and the staff is in place. I would say, however, that if the Panthers had to pick right now, the list would be smaller. Even if they knew who they wanted you have to research them all, because people drop, trades are offered, etc

I guess the 2 people FOR Newton were just loud. I was surprised to read so much ProNewton sentiment. I happily scratch NEWTON from the discussion. I almost didn't include Bowers because not much is said about him. However, he is probably the closest thing in the draft to a true #1 pick. Besides, I am hoping someone like Tennessee or Cincinnati likes him enough to offer a deal to move up.

First off, i wont scratch any QB off the list because the combine could change Richarson's mind. as for Bowers, he could be picked (on potential), i dont see any team trading up to get him though. i see the Titans going for a quarterback and i see the Bengals going Green if they cant get Bowers.

The Panthers scouting philosophy emphasizes game performance, so I honestly wouldn't expect the Combine to change anything.

I'd like to know how fast Green times out in the 40.

4.45 is what I have seen, of course, all times are unofficial and with a WR, how fast out of the break are they is more important.

If we do draft him, I do not know how much better he makes us with the #1 overall pick. Given that Clausen is awful, I dont see him making an impact like the #1 overall should. Nobody is gonna buy tickets if we draft A.J Green. The more I think about it, the more I think it has to be Fairley or Peterson. The bottom line: Im not thrilled, nor will I be thrilled with any selection we make.

I think one of the biggest problems is the panthers are now drafting for the upcoming season. If you measure draft picks solely on immediate needs and not their long-term value to the franchise, you will make mistakes. Few playes jump right in and succeed. RBs are the exception, usually.

If you want the QB to prosper, establish an OL and give him weapons. Green will be a weapon for 10 years. Our WR situation is not what it needs to be for the QB to be good. Bring in the next #1 while you have Smith in the event that it takes him a year to catch fire.

I would think the interviews, seeing the player up close and how he carries himself would matter. I am also concerned that the scouting philosophy has been altered a bit. Maybe I am wrong.

The panthers will want to talk to guys like Green with a red flag. I read somewhere, for example, that Powe, a DT from Ole Miss, was illiterate when he enrolled there. Is that a factor? I would say so, since the NFL is so complex.

true, but the combine could change their minds, this isnt a clear-cut draft, personally, i dont mind keeping Clausen for one more year and passing on the QBs and wait till next year when Barkley and Luck could come out.

true, true. People dont think Clausen is going to be anything, but you never know, i agreed that Luck should've been the pick, BUT without him, the other QBs are major risks and each one of them could fail. the best one in my book is Jake Locker, but people wont agree on that and many think it's Newton.

Yes interviews will factor in. But dont expect them to put to much weight on the Combine numbers and performance. Game film tells more than one or two days of auditions.

Im just so confused, Would Clausen have been any better if Otah had played this year? I mean the running game would have been better? Would he have been any better if Davidson would had been a better OC. It makes me wonder if we really need a QB, Don't forget this was his rookie year. I watched the games and he looked awful alot but I think there are too many variables. I have mixed feelings, Offense or Defense. I would go with Fairly and then find an o-line man in the 3rd round. I believe Otah being out hurt the offense more than the way Clausen played.

i am honestly with you here, i am not saying Clausen is good or average, but i do think he's unproven like Kolb is.

He just needs to be given a fighting chance. Who knows the new head coach my have a totally different philosophy. But the Panthers have always hung their hat on good defense. We have some great players on that side of the ball but Meeks system was not that smash mouth Panthers ball we are used to.

As has been pointed out already I also think your list is correct minus Newton. I think one of those 4 will definitely be the choice and I can see the upside to each pick. My personal preference would be:

1. Fairley

2. Peterson

3. Bowers

4. Green

But I don't put a huge emphasis on that. I don't think it will be a big deal which one we pick as long as our choice ends up proving he's worth the pick. The one good thing about Luck not declaring is that it does make draft day a little more unpredictable, hah.

I know most of you are looking way down the road in your desire to have Green here. I mean, you have to be, right? He can't make Clausen look ANY better. Meanwhile, our DT situation, right now, is terrible. Our WR situation is not terrible. Lots of this boils down to if we can get a vet QB in here for 1-2 years. Go look at who Orton had as his WR corps this year. If you don't think a guy like that, minus Jeff Davidson, could get the ball to Gettis and LaFell...you have some screws loose.

yeah true, honestly, the pick could be anything it ALL depends on who the coach and GM want, the coach may not want Clausen and may want him out. the coach MAY want to keep Clausen and get him a reciever like Green or he may want to keep the offense like it is and just sign a vet. QB to help Clausen and go defense, all depends on the coach/gm and what they want.
