"I wonder how he like's Carolina Blue" Fairley Thread

What makes you think AJ Green is automatically going to be a #1? A lot of the highly touted WR's from last year's draft fell short of expectations, and none of them were #1's. Sure, maybe some of them could have been and maybe they will be in the future, but WR is a HUGE risk/reward in the draft. IMO, Gettis and Lafell showed a lot of promise their rookie year in a pathetically bad offensive system with horrible QB play. Give them a competent OC and a good QB and they'll be very productive. Offenses around the league have done more with less. This draft is deep at WR and we can get a good prospect later in the draft if we choose to.

the chance of failure exists with every player.. especially DT, so what makes you think Green isn't closer to being a playmaker than Fairley?

I'm sorry but Green has shown consistent production since he stepped on the college field. I'm not comfortable taking a one year wonder with the #1 pick. Sure Fairley has had a great season but that's a big risk to take. Same goes for Bowers.

Without Smitty in the lineup this year Clausen passed to a tune of 61 yards. That is embarrassing. Green provides a threat on the field when Smitty is not. Now picture both of them together.

With that being said, it is possible to draft Fairley since we hired a defensive minded coach. None the less, our Defense performed admirably while always being on the field and without a standout DT. I believe Rivera will be able to bring in a few FA DTs and pick a few out of the draft which seems to be pretty deep. Would you rather have a defensive guru draft offensive players with mid-late round draft choices to help the league's worst offense or use those picks in an area he specializes in for a top 15 defense?

Gettis/Lafell/Smitty will be absolutely fine at WR as long as we get a good OC and a good QB in free agency or trade. Plenty of teams in the league have good passing games without great receivers. It's more about the system and the QB than it is about the WR's. Yes, we could address DT in free agency but we already drafted three receivers last year and taking a WR in the first round is a huge gamble, so I think DT is the smarter pick.

Our offense was bad because of our Coordinator and our QB, NOT because of our WR's. I'd love to have Green on the team, but if Fairley and Green are roughly equal in talent at their respective position, you HAVE to take Fairley. we're hurting so much more at DT.

I totally agree.

We drafted three WRs last season. There's no way that you spend a fourth pick in two years on another one.

I'll e exicited no matter who we get, how bout process of elimination - Which of the top 5- Cam, Fairly, Bowers, Peterson or Green have highest chance of failure? I think it's Cam and I dont think Green will impact as much until yr 3, where as the 3 defensive guys will start and be key players on our defense.

Oh I hope no one in our divisions drafts Matthews either.

btw, don't get me wrong.. if I hear the name Newton, Fairley, Green, or Peterson I'm going to look forward to see how they turn out..

I believe we'll be able to do more offensively with Green and Orton.. we'll have an offense a lot closer to what we've been looking for.. one that we could benefit by having our defense off the field longer..

I think there are some interesting DT prospects in FA.. we don't necessarily have to draft one and hope he catches on in 2-3 years..

You have a good argument, but there aren't any QB's even close to the talent level of Fairley, Peterson, Bowers or Green. Gabbert or Mallett won't be upgrades over Jimmy. We won't be drafting a QB first overall, mark my words. There are some good QB options in free agency and I think we'll go that route.

I am positive Gabbert would be a huge upgrade over Jimmy but I am not sold he is #1 material.

Fairley played very well and looks solid. I have concerns about him but I see why you would want to take him.

As I said, I understand your pick, I just disagree DT is our biggest need. You have a point that Fairley is the best available pick for a position we do need though.

While Fairley is no Suh, he is a very talented DT. Honestly though that is not a knock on Fairley because Suh was probably the best rookie DT ever.

Fairley is looking to be the odds on favorite for us at #1. Newton showed tonight that he is a winner but nothing more special than The Golden Calf of Bristol was. Is he a 1st round pick, yes. Should he be the #1 overall, ehhhhhhhhhhhh I don't think so.

Mallet and Gabbert are both possibilities but if you are going to draft a QB out of Newton, Gabbert, and Mallet then you go with Newton first and he is not NFL ready at all.

Peterson is a possible candidate but if Marshall doesn't leave then DB is not really a need for us at all.

Green could be our #1 and he would be BPA but I don't think that the gap between Green and Fairley of being BPA is that big. Once you add in the massive need we have at DT, I think we have to go Fairley if we don't trade out of the pick.

Gabbert, Mallet, Locker. They may be good QB's but none of them are worth the #1 overall pick. The FO is also not going to give up on Jimmy yet, and I don't think they should either. He played in the most pathetic offense in the league as a rookie with an underachieving line. He could still turn out to be a decent quarterback and, either way, we're going to trade for or sign a solid veteran QB (Orton or Kolb, for example). Another Rookie QB is NOT what we need. If we pick #1 it will be Bowers, Green, Fairley or Peterson.

Blaine Gabbert isn't as good as people think he is. This weird hype train for him came out of left-field, and it should go back.

The guy is not NFL ready at all. He's never taken snaps from under center, he has always been in the spread offense, and his numbers aren't that great (16 TDs/9 INTs). Plus, look at Chase Daniels, he had huge numbers at Mizz.

I also don't think Mallett will be that good of an NFL QB. He already has been arrested for public drunkenness, and he's said to have serious "anger" issues. The comparisons to Ryan Leaf are becoming more and more apparent. Plus, I don't think the guy could move in the pocket at all.

Either of those guys would not be an upgrade over Jimmy, seeing as Jimmy has had at least one season in the NFL to get used to the speed, style, reads, etc.
